Swapping a Juke for an Astra - picking up tomorrow
« on: 28 May 2019, 21:58:41 »

https://www.bristolstreet.co.uk/used-car/2181548/vauxhall-astra-1.6i-16v-exclusiv-5dr-auto-petrol-hatchback/

Wife has a Juke Tekna. She has shoulder problem, and hasn't driven for 4 months, until we test drove this.

It's pretty much a straight swap. (Except one has lots of pointless extras and the other in a colour of piss.

Wife wanted an electric park brake, because can't use the handbrake due to pain. Although we all know that you don't need to use the parking brake in an auto.

Pick it up tomorrow.

The colour is taken directly from the projectile puke scene in the Exorcist. :)

If you need an exact colour match for bile green, this may come in handy.  :)

Well, picking it up was an event.

The plan was :

1) early dart from work in Stoke, and drive Juke to Maccelesfield.
2) Be moderately impressed by the handover and spot the new maps that they threw in without us mentioning it
3) Drive to Ingleton, via M6, and have tea with sister in law, in her caravan.
4) Take wife home to Merseyside
5) Today. Drive Omega to work
6) Stay in the worst hotel within 2 miles of J15 on the M6

The Actual.
1) Yes - arrived early
2) Yes, but no maps, but hey
2b) return when I realise the spanner light is on.
3) Drive towards M56 Which is google maps telling me that the M6 is quite busy and it has a quicker way.
3b) Stop at traffic lights and realise there's smoke coming off the front wheel. Smell of burning brake pad.
3c) Drive to Costa (1/2 mile) and cry. Phone dealer.
3d) Await a curtesy car.  6:30 Corsa delivered.
3e) Take wife's advice, and book into same shitty hotel Near Stoke.
4) Wife has returned home with Brother in Law Today
5) Today. Listen to an explanation about the lugs on a NEW brake pad failing. (I know if that happened it's rarer than rare, and I know enough that if it did happpen it would fail safe - that is the pad would not be able to escape)
6) Await delivery of Astra to Hotel (It's on the service manager's way home, and will be a good road test)

To be fair to Bristol Street Motors Maccelefield Vauxhall, shit happens and I think they responded well enough.

Mind you wife is livid that I only did 16 miles in her new car before it broke.

A common problem with fitting new brake pads
people just pull the old out and stuff the new in
I remove the caliper, shims, slides, clean them up, using a wire brush and sometimes even a small file
then lube it up and make sure the pads and calipers move freely
sometimes you need to file paint from the "ears" of the new pads or they are too tight
I think the extra time is time well spent because the brakes work and wear evenly

No excuse for the EML being on , that should have been picked up at PDI

They probably would. I know that the 3.2 doesn't have enough compression for it to make any difference whatsoever, though. ;)

Tata suggest 99 octane fuel for my car. I use it when I see it but have yet to notice what difference the 10-15p  a litre makes.....even placebo. :-\

I find that the occasional random eml that comes on, does NOT do it with 97 Ron (3.2 Mv6)

Anyway, brakes are fixed, wife has driven a few miles now and is happy.
