coolant leak
« on: 04 August 2018, 20:43:04 »

I have a coolant leak from a black plastic unit with 3 smallish 20MM sort of size pipes going into it. Its located next to the servo so difficult to see at the back of the engine.
Anyone know whats its called? or where to buy? cheers

Probably the HBV (heater bypass valve).

Do a search on this forum and you will find plenty of information (and photos) on it.

Along with your purchase of the HBV, make sure you buy a large box of Elastoplast! :(

Read the guide ;)

From underneath you won't even see it, let alone reach it...

Never had a 2.2 so don't know the layout, but surely this has to be easier to change from above even if it can be reached from below?

2.2 is indeed even easier from the top compared to the V6  :y

2.2 are a bar steward because you need small steel hands to avoid getting cut to pieces...the original clips have a tongue on them and are hard to get at you can buy a special pair if clip removers that are a pair of pliers with a long cable attached which once you get them on the clip you can lock them in place and open the clip....

I changed my first HBV on a 2.0 from below. I could see it very clearly, and managed to change it at arms's length. Later I changed one on a 2.2 from above, after removing the scuttle. Still not easy. I am impressed how tough 20 year hoses are.

Have never removed a scuttle to change one. Ever.

V6 or 2.2 or both? In V6 I succeeded only after having removed the scuttle, difficult for me anyway.

Both, but left hand drive different as HBV is tucked in the corner of the pollen filter cavity ;)
