Omega Electrical and Audio Help / Car Horns Won't Shut UP
« on: 01 March 2021, 19:01:54 »
Hi Guys

Is there anyone out there who loves solving electrical problems and can suggest something I could try.

The problem is the horns on my Omega have decided to start blasting for no apparent reason, also when I press the horn button on the steering wheel they don’t stop sounding when I release the button and I’ve already removed the power sounded.

And another weird thing I’ve found, if I remove the ignition key the display unit won’t go out, but the stupid thing is when the horns got stuck on and I pulled the relay to them to shut them up, the display unit worked perfectly ie comes on when the ignition is switched on and switches off when the key is removed.

Anyone got any ideas?

Hi Doctor Gollum

Yes I got it done, just hadn't got around to posting the outcome until now.

If I can manage to post some photos I will, as it may be of some help to anyone else who is still running around in one of these old Omega's and has the same job to do.

Right guys as promised, this was the final outcome of replacing the bearing, first off, I have to apologise about saying there is no mention in the workshop manual about a master spline, I got that totally wrong there is even a photo showing it  :-[.

With the shaft off the car applying WD40 did no good, in the end I had to lay the shaft on the floor and hit some of the bolt hole lugs using a copper hammer and it did eventually come apart.
I have to say with it still attached to the car no amount of levering would have budged it.

Even after getting it apart and locating the master splines it had to be hammered back together as it certainly wasn’t a sliding fit, even after greasing it.
I used a bearing puller to remove the old bearing from the shaft.

On fitting it back under the car I found I’d knocked it together slightly more than it should have been and as a result the bolts wasn’t quite long enough to go through the flanges and rubber flexi joints allowing enough thread to get a nut on, so I used some all-thread to get it started.
Once the shaft was extended enough I swoped the all thread for the original bolts.

The only thing I could not replace was the rubber gaiter which covers the splined section of the shaft, it appears its longer sold by Vauxhall and I could not find anything near the size, so for better or worse I’ve used some sealer to try and make good the old gaiter, I’ll keep my eye on it from time to time.

Hi Doctor Gollum

Thanks for your reply, I tried your idea of using a block of wood and giving the bearing carrier a few clouts and nah it still wouldn’t budge and not very easy trying to do when lying on your back.
It was so annoying because I could waggle the prop all over the place but just couldn’t get the splines to slide.

Anyway, I did another search and came across a posting on vauxhallownersnetwork.co.uk way back on 23 Aug 2006 suggesting giving the prop a pull down in the middle near the universal joint and sure enough it worked.
To get it completely off the car I did need to undo part of the exhaust because it crosses over from the passenger side to the driver’s side and prevented the prop dropping down far enough.

For now, I’ve stood the prop up and squirted some WD40 on it so hopefully it will run down the splines, if that fails to loosen it, I guess I could try some heat on it now it’s off the car.
I will post again just to let anyone reading this know how I get on.

Incidentally I understand what you said about a master spline, I have come across that before, having said that, in the Haynes Manual it reads about marking the two halves for matching purposes when refitting, I’ve also managed to get a look at the Vauxhall TIS 2000 Manual and it says exactly the same thing.
There’s absolutely no mention of a master spline it just goes on about marking both halves for refitting.
I’m beginning to think when the shafts when originally made they were just fitted together and balanced not having a master spline which is a crap idea I know.

Omega General Help / Propshaft Bearing Replacement Help Needed
« on: 04 September 2020, 21:15:43 »
Hi Guys

I need to replace the propshaft bearing on my 2.5TD Omega, I’ve removed the six nuts and bolts at each end of the shaft plus the bolts holding the centre bearing housing to the car underside.
I’ve tried levering it at each end while trying to waggle it in the middle to try and get it to slide on the splines in the middle of the shaft but it won’t budge, not that its very easy to lever because of the rubber flexi joints at both ends which I’m trying not to damage.

I’ve pulled the rubber gaiter back which covers the splines and they seem clean enough from what I can see.
For now, I’ve sprayed some WD40 on them, but in the meantime has anyone out there had the same problem if so, what did you do to get around the issue?

Thanks to anyone who can help

OK Fellas

Stemo,
I must admit I’d not thought about the gearbox being under load, thank you for suggesting it.

Doctor Gollum,
I did check the oil level and it was ok, I wished it wound have been as simple as that.
To be truthful we’ve been having issues of getting the box into first and reverse gear, more so when the weather is cold.
I thought maybe the clutch was the problem, stupid thing is it doesn’t slip and if I stick the handbrake on and try to drive away the car will stall rather than the clutch slip.
What we’ve had to do is put it into first or reverse with engine not running depress the clutch and then start it up and its happy with that.
Once the engine/car has warmed up if we park up to do a bit of shopping for an hour or so, there doesn’t seem to be an issue getting it into gear.
I gave up with that one  :-\

Robson,
I agree with you about lying under the car with it running, I don’t think I’d be too excited about the idea  :o

Johnnydog,
You suggested chatting to my friendly mot man, oddly enough I found this on the RAC website:
RAC 2018
Rumbling noise coming from the gearbox
You might be forgiven for thinking that any strange noises coming from your car would automatically fail your MOT. But the test doesn't actually cover the condition of the gearbox, clutch or engine (apart from emissions), so a growling sound in the gearbox wouldn't affect it.

Right guys I’ve just finished doing a wise thing put the bolts back into the propshaft and dropped the car off the axle stands  :y
I’ll get in touch with the garage where I get it mot’d and see what they have to say.
To be truthful if it is the gearbox, I think it will be the end of the road for it as I’m finding it a bit of a maul now, doing things as heavy as that especially trying to do it lying on one’s back.

Just out of curiously, are any of you still running around in Omega’s??

Hello Doctor Gollum

Thank you for taking the time to reply, a few things:

Am I correct in assuming there is no need to unbolt the centre bearing bracket leaving the bearing in place  :-\

I won’t pull the flanged tail shaft from the gearbox but I’m wondering if it would come flying out if I dare run the car in gear for a few seconds, I’m assuming its splined and just a sliding fit and could easily slip out  :-\

Obviously, the car won’t go anywhere with prop disconnected, it’s a manual gearbox and the whole exercise is just to confirm the noise is defiantly coming from the gearbox itself  :-\

Thank you again for your help

Omega General Help / Omega 2.5TD Propshaft Removal
« on: 16 June 2020, 22:24:50 »

Hi Guys

Is there anyone out there still trying to keep a Vauxhall Omega 2.5TD on the road.
Having said that mine has started making an awful noise which I think is coming from the gearbox so it may well be the end of the road for it.

The noise disappears when the box is in neutral and just the engine running, I say I think its coming from the gearbox and then I got to thinking could it be coming from the propshaft.

So, my master plan was to disconnected the propshaft from the gearbox as it would eliminate the rear axle or anything else which takes its drive from the gearbox.
Now this is where I’m not sure what I’m doing, I’ve taken the three bolts out where the propshaft connects onto the gearbox see in the attached photo and I’ve also remove the two screws which hold the bracket which in turn supports the bearing it’s about half way along the drive shaft.
I then tried to lever the propshaft off the back of the gearbox but it doesn’t seem to want to part, is there something I’m doing wrong??

Again, see my photos for clarification on where I’ve put the lever in an attempt to part the propshaft for the gearbox.
Rightly or wrongly I was then going to start the car and go through the gears to see if the noise was still there but I don’t know if oil will come out of the box?

Does anyone have any ideas on the above and thanks to anyone who can shed some light.

Hi Guys

I’ve done a silly, I’ve taken the power steering pump and alternator off my Omega 2.5TD and ended up with this bracket but can’t for the life of me see where it should fit.

Can anyone out there send a picture or sketch of where it should go.

Omega General Help / Power Steering Flushing
« on: 30 August 2019, 15:59:50 »
Hi Guys

Has anyone out there got any bright ideas, first off I’m talking about the Omega with the 2.5 L diesel engine not that I think in this instance it will make any difference if it was petrol.

My problem is the power steering has packed up and the fault was traced to the pump which has now been taken off and sent for repair.
The repairers have said the system needs to be flushed out before fitting the repaired pump which all makes good sense to me.

Ok there are two pipes which connect onto the fluid top up reservoir, one goes down and connects to the power steering pump via a banjo union unlike the one shown at B in the image but the same as the one shown at A.

Does anyone know the best way to flush the system out from the banjo at A, or could I simply pour fluid in at point C until it comes out at banjo A, although I think point C is the return fluid pipe so I would be flushing the system in reverse if you get my meaning.

Thanks to anyone who can shed some light

Omega General Help / Omega Clutch
« on: 22 November 2018, 23:20:28 »
Hi Guys

I’ve posted on here some time ago about an issue I’ve got with the clutch in my Omega 2.5TD with a manual gearbox.

Just to recap, start the engine and the car won’t go into gear, keep a steady pressure on the gear lever turn engine off and it goes straight into gear no problem.

The fluid level isn’t going down in the shared brake reservoir.

Tried bleeding the concentric slave cylinder problem still persists.

There’s no clutch slip when accelerating hard or going up hill.

Once the car is running within a few minutes the gears go in no problem, and by a few minutes I mean in the time it takes to reverse the car off my driveway.

Question 1: Is there another cylinder behind the clutch pedal, if not does anyone know how the system works, ie when pressure is applied to the clutch pedal how does it force fluid down the pipe to the concentric cylinder if there’s no cylinder attached to the clutch pedal.

Question 2: Is there a way of testing the brake master cylinder to find out if the rubbers inside it are simply allowing fluid to pass back and forth over them.

Question 3: If there is another cylinder at the back of the clutch pedal is there any way it can be tested to see if it’s working as it should.

I don’t want to go rushing straight in and buy a new complete clutch and concentric cylinder plus a new dual mass flywheel, well at least not without checking the other items out first.

Thanks to anyone who can help

Diamond

I thought all the small character sections were made up from small diodes surely if they are 4 bulbs it wouldn't have any effect on the lettering if you get my meaning.

Cheers
