Hi,
My 3.0 V6 Elite has developed a Automatic Gearbox Problem, The car feels like its pulling away in 3rd or something and the Snow Flake & Sport Buttons are no longer working, the snow button was flickering and so was the Sport Button light on the dash, if I use the gearbox as a manual and pull away in 1st its fine and change up as I need, anyone have any ideas??

Something has upset the gearbox ECU.

When you move the stick, do the LEDs by the gearbox setting move in line with the stick, or do their own thing?

Sound like it might be related to the selector switch

Yes all the LEDs still light up

I’ll check in the morning, but I think it’s just the one that’s selected, I noticed today that reverse gear is smooth as normal

- that tells me that the selector switch is OK

Just re read your original post. Flickering lights tend to be caused by loose connections or broken wires.
Paying someone to read the codes may not be the best use of your hard earned if the root cause is a loose connection 
If you are able to read your own codes then that would be a different matter though.

The flickering hasn't came back on, if you go through the gear manually it work fine, but if you stop in drive and go to drive off again it pulls away in 3rd, so every time I stop I return it to 1st gear and go back through the gears again, there is a slight judder when I change it from 1st to 2nd but drives fine

I had the codes read today, and the Snap-On code reader couldn't find the gearbox!!!!
The Snap On Code Reader works fine, I think the problem is with the Omega, its as if the car didn't have a gearbox fitted???

Are they using the scanner as an OBD tool, or with the appropriate Vauxhall 'key'? Snap-On scanners require lots of keys, bought separately at great expense; mine has about 2 dozen with it, although the tool no longer works.


Any OBD scanner will only read the engine ECU, as that's all the standard covers.

In my experience they'll not be the least interested. I had the same kind of symptoms on my 3.2, but it only happened last summer after prolonged high speed use, was better with fluid topped up, but still happened occassionally.  I bought new filter and seals to change the gearbox oil, but procrastination and the need to do the cam belt and front brakes have taken priority.

I would try to find someone with Tech2 who knows how to use it (either an enthusiast or an independent technician)

I can read the codes and live data for the gearbox in my 3.2 and my 2.6 using the "scanmyopel" app on my Android phone with a £15 bluetooth adapter. I don't know if that would work on your 3.0

One of the OOF admins was based in Scotland and was able to offer Tech2 services but I haven't seen him posting for a while - don't know if he still has his Tech2

Hotel21 in Fife has a Tech2, IIRC.

First things first, though, might be worth checking that the gearbox ECU fuse is OK, as, if the gearbox ECU has lost power, then it won't respond to a code reader!

Well worth checking the gearbox fluid level whenever there are problems, as said.

Also, make sure the 3 round connectors behind the battery are securely fastened, and the connectors where the loom enters the gearbox.

Beyond that, codes from the gearbox ECU would tell us what it's not ahappy about.

 Dont know if this is relavent on an Omega, but have you changed your HT leads recently?
On the Senator, if a cheaper set of HT leads were fitted, they upset the gearbox ECU and caused it to go into limp mode.
High quality leads sorted it out

Not sure on the number on a PFL, but there's just the one fuse that powers all the gearbox electronics.

Fuse 9 failure results in full gearbox limp, and "Auto Gearbox" on MID.  Defo worth checking, it won't be the first one I've seen blown.

High quality leads sorted it out

I got a new coil pack and leads fitted about a week before it started playing up
