Omega General Help / Re: Engine Keeps Running

Don't make a habit of disconnecting the battery while the engine is running, the battery basically acts as a huge dampening capacitor which will absorb any spikes in the supply from the alternator. Without it you could damage some of the sensitive electronics.

Yes - and alternators don't like running with a low loading.

Omega General Help / Re: Shouldn't mine have???

My '98 CDX has it

Good point about the parking lights.

Reason I tend to worry a bit about the alarm is because I only do local trips and the battery never really reaches 100% (according to the green indicator in any case).

thanks guys, can i ask
IF i have to leave my car for about 7 - 14 days, apart from taking the battery terminals off, is there ANY other way you can leave the car without draining the battery?
how about clicking the key fob once, what does that do apart from just locking the car? i know if you press it twice it does something else?
not quite sure what though?
if i can just lock the car and not have the alarm on, thats no big deal because my car is placed behind 3 cars on the drive anyway

My Omega is not being used at present.  As it is in a secure garden, behind another car, I tend to leave it unlocked so that the alarm is not on.

The second press of the key activates the deadlocks on the doors, boot and fuel cap.  This means that even if a window is smashed, the lock leaver cannot be raised.

I agree whole heartedly with what others have said about your battery issue.  Trickle charge your existing one first and, if all is well then great.  If not, don't mess about with other batteries, get a GM go one.  I use them on both my Vauxhalls and also on me transit vans.  They are excellent units and have the added benefit of looking good in the engine bay.

Omega General Help / Re: Cam Sensor Fault
« on: 06 January 2008, 23:15:41 »
Cam sensors (the original unmodified version) and VERY fragile and fail regularly.  Vaux now have a modified sensor available.  I have one fitted in my 2.0 16v Cavalier and, touch wood, seems fine after 2 years.

The symptoms you describe point the cam sensor failure.

And yes, get the timing belt etc changed!

Hope this helps

Omega General Help / Re: Smoke from dipstick and oil filler cap?

I wonder if you have a vacuum leak somewhere?

As it is a 95 model, and I have the same engine in my Cavalier, does the breather system on your engine have the modification?  the modification is a large box fitted in the middle of the large pipe coming up from the crankcase to the rocker cover.

It is very good and should cure this problem.

Hope it helps

Your idling problem and cutting out is most likely caused by the Air Idle Control valve.  It is very common on these engines.  I think that there is a guide to cleaning it on here.

Hope you manage to get a MOT without too much hassle / expense.

Yes, they did.  One was fitted to my Cavalier (2.0 16v) which I know is the older version of the engine and management system, but it is still a Siemens Simtec.

You will have to cut the old connector off the loom and do a bit of soldering to get the new loom connector on, which comes with the sensor.  Touch wood, I have not had further problems, so far................ (It has been fitted for around 2 years BTW but my mileage is low at around 3 - 4k PA).

Hope this info helps

Omega General Help / Re: Battery charging
« on: 15 December 2007, 11:25:56 »
This is exactly what I did earlier this week. Saved all the hassle of recoding everything after reconnecting the battery following the charge.

As Kevin says though, trickle charge only!!

Also, make sure that you connect the charger clips to the battery and then switch the charger on.

But doesn't that require a lighter socket that is permanently live?

Omega General Help / Re: Where is my Radio Antenne
« on: 15 December 2007, 11:34:49 »
I think that there is also an Antenna connector in the loom leading up to the radio.  This is, I think, to be found in the passenger footwell and has been the source of problems in the past.  This is for RHD cars, so not sure if yours is the same.

I find that radio reception is pretty poor even when tuned to a strong station.  No substitute for a "proper" antenna I think.

Excellent, I am glad that you have a result as far as the car is concerned anyway.  Not sure what to do about the Vacuum though! ;D

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
I agree with the above,  but would state that in my guide I recommend that debris is either manually removed or vacuumed out  ;)  I assumed that the visual debris was already removed and pouring a small amount of water would check the functioning of the gromet.

Follow all the advice here and your drain will soon be clear.

I wrote the guide for this procedure.  On my car, which is also a 1998, the length of wire simply "poked through" the gromet.  It was not solid in any way and I flushed clean water through whilst agitating the wire back and forth through the gromet.  This approach worked for me.

It may be that your car is an early '98 and so the drain exits at the wheel arch rather than onto the chassis leg like my car.  From your description, I would say that you are in the right place and your exit is in the wheelarch.

If you pour a small amount of water into the drain area, does it drain away?

Hope this helps.
