X30 rear crank seal
« on: 06 December 2017, 07:57:36 »

Hi all, have a member who has an oil leak from the rear crank seal on his auto Omega. Apart from the gearbox, torque converter and flex plate, how much more does he need to strip off to replace please?

Havent done the job myself Keith, but I would imagine that's about it. Isnt that enough?  :D
I wouldn't bother unless its a really a serious leak, or the gearbox is coming out for another reason anyway.

The question relates to how the seal is held in. Is it just pressed into the rear crank bearing cap (like on a C30SE/C36GET) or is it captive in some way such that you have to take the sump off and unbolt the rear crank bearing cap?

You need the prop disconnecting, front pipes off plus the wiring and cooler pipes to deal with. (there is a guide for auto box removal I seem to recall?)

Its not to bad a job to be honest but, you must ensure the torque convertor is fitted to the auto box correctly before refit or you will fracture the flex plate.

So, is it just a pressed in seal?
Good point about downpipes :y

Simply pressed in, but be bloody careful not to damage either the crank or the casing otherwise it will destroy the seal the instant you turn the engine...

That gets very frustrating very quicky as you not only have to redo the entire job, but also potentially end up with a permanent leak :'(

Show him the guide on cleaning the crankcase breathers.

If the breathers haven't been cleaned recently then get him to do that first
