Head re-assembly torque settings
« on: 18 April 2014, 11:28:40 »

My 2.2 head is back and very shiny.

Have torque settings and sequence for head bolts and rocker cover but that's it.

So for example just putting the EGR back on, what torque to use? Same for inlet manifold, exhaust manifold etc.

Are there any defined values or it is just nice and tight? I don't want to strip anything or have it come lose later!

Any advise welcome.

Many thanks

Steve

If you have a Haynes manual to hand, I believe the 2.2 torque settings are broadly similar to the 2.0 16v :-\ should give you a starting point anyway :y

One of my torque wrenches has some odd metric unit that is 10x bigger than a Nm. Seems odd that your torque wrench doesn't go down to 25Nm :-\

In the Elring gasket kit and the company that skimmed it.

It's 25nm then 90 deg, 90 deg, 90 deg, 15 deg.

I just can get the initial 25 unless 28 would do?

Just changed my last post to something more helpful. ::)

The 25Nm is enough to squeeze the gasket flat and start all the bolts at the same tension. Personally I would use 28Nm rather than leave the engine in bits.............

Halfords has saved the day and I have a nice 0 to 28 one now + a angle meter.

Head it back on and torqued up  :y

Thank you for all the help

Was the head warped? If so how much off?

New - I purchased the Elring kit with bolts, I believe they are 'stretch bolts' and can only be used once....

Skimmed by 0.0065" - I am not sure if that is bad or good, the chap seemed to suggest it was minor but worth doing...

I used to have a Suzuki GS550. The aluminium that the head was cast from was so soft that it would change shape as the head was torqued down.

IIRC it only had two bearings on each camshaft because 4 bearings would never have been in line  ::)

I have a sneaking suspicion that the combination of a very rigid cast steel engine block and an aluminium head means that slight warping isn't an issue once the head bolts have been done up TAF. The important thing is there should be no blemishes in the surface where the fire rings are.......
