Omega General Help / Re: So now I have two broken cars!!
« on: 13 December 2007, 16:59:45 »
The Boy is closer, based in Brackley which is not far from the M40 - Junction 9 I think.

All my '98 heated seats also work!! :)

The ABS system on these cars is apparently very sensitive to brake lamp failures / incorrect bulbs.  I suspect that replacing the blown lamp with an OE item may well sort  the suspected ECU problems.  The running problems **could** be due to the ABS ECU.

However, I would check the connections at the gearbox before condemning the ECUs.  The ECU that you have "flashed" the codes out of is the Engine Management ECU.  You ideally need to get the gearbox codes read as well.  For this, you need a code reader.  Apparently the chepo Tech 2 can read the gearbox.  Alternatively, two members on here have real Tech 2 readers, The Boy and Marks DTM.

Hope this helps in some small way

Omega General Help / Re: Exhaust
« on: 05 December 2007, 13:31:02 »
This was the list for my 1998 2.5 Minifacelift:

v0093181162 RH Centre Silencer £95.26
v0093181157 LH Centre Silencer £92.76
V0024434133 Exhaust Screw (Actually bolts for the centre sections to cat flange)
V0009157100 Rear Silencer £107.00
v0090466668 Exhaust mounting £4.38 (rubber mounts)

These part numbers are taken from my receipt - I do not have EPG.  Prices are on TC and ex VAT.

I hope that this helps

Omega General Help / Re: what is eco
« on: 05 December 2007, 11:38:55 »
The eco switch, cuts the A/C compressor in and out.  With eco activated, teh A/C compressor is switched off which saves fuel hence the ECO description.

Hope this helps

I believe that it is now "illegal" to just replenish an air-con system .. it has to have a pressure check for leaks first .. environmental pollution and all that .....

 .......

We'd better take all those cans of R134a from the shelves of Halfords if that was the case. IMHO it's illegal to knowingly fill a leaky system with refrigerant.

It is illegal to knowingly refill a leaking system.

As I have said in the past, and many have said in this thread, a proper vac and regas is the only real way forward.

Incidentally, the A/C should be serviced every couple of years by doing this and replacing the receiver / dryer.

I would also offer to come and help / watch & learn but rather fear there is probably enough people already.

Best of luck and hope the damage is not too far reaching!

What a great community spirt this is!!!!!!!!!! ;D

Omega General Help / Re: Battery question
« on: 15 November 2007, 09:15:53 »
I would firstly check the connections at the alternator.

Then, follow the thickest cable (+be I think the marking is on the alternator) to the starter and make sure that this connection is clean and tight.

You should not be having the charge light coming on when presenting electrical load.

There is either a bad, dirty or a combination of the two, connection, or the alternator itself is worn (most likely to be the brushes)

To answer your question, I don't think that there is any harm in fitting a bigger battery - you will have a greater reserve of power.  In a properly maintained car (i.e. one that starts well) I am not sure if there is any benefit though....

Hope this helps.

Upper cylinder and valve lube is not as good on LPG, oil satys cleaner though (still need to change it at the same intervals though)

I have heard this and also read a recommendation that a tank of petrol should be run through to provide lubrication for the valves.  Whether this is correct I am not sure, but it makes logical sense to me.

Thanks for that Hotel21, I will try it out next time I need to quote in that manner

If I do find out, I will.

Sorry about the above post - I can't work out how to do multiple quotes / cut one quote up as Kevin did

Probably some environmental nonsense that dictates that we can't put as much lead in them, or something. So, we make them slightly more environmentally friendly and throw away 3 times as many of them ::)

***** Exactly.  This seems to be the way of thinking these days - look at the short term gain only forget the other effects.

I remember my 1981 Morris Ital which I finally got rid of in about 1993 was still on its' original battery (had been in the family since new and i know it was never changed). My alternator died at one point and I drove around for a week with no charge to the battery. It held up fine.

12 years for a battery - that is amazing.

Gel lead acid batteries have been around for ages in other applications such as aircraft, where spillages are not good. They are widely used as backup batteries in UPSs and burglar alarms.

Probably better suited to standby use than in a car, TBH, but they can be made to do the job. They are more expensive to make then a liquid lead acid battery, and not made in the same volumes at that sort of rating, hence more expensive to buy. They are also not as robust as liquid lead acid batteries but can be made smaller and ususally lighter for the same CCA, although AH rating will normally be less.

Agreed and I would add that they have quite specific charging requirements

Could also be that the clutch itself is knackered.  Not in so far as it slips, but rather the some or all of the diaphragm springs are broken.  This would certainaly cause the issues you describe.

This happened to me recently, the clutch went in my Transit van - I was stopped at the bottom of a hill at red lights at the time - the only gear that would engage was 5th!  That was fun.  The only way I could engage reverse was by turning the engine off, engaging reverse and starting again.  Van was moving with the clutch fully depressed.

Popped a new clutch in and all was well again.  The diaphragm springs were shot - because a previous cowboy mechanic fitted a clutch plate that was too small.

Hope this helps

Omega General Help / Re: Specialist tools?
« on: 08 October 2007, 14:40:58 »
I can vouch for the fact that the Halfords 150 piece socket set is very good.  This weekend I changed the discs and pads on my Transit minibus and all differing fittings (torx) allen bolt were present and correct.

I do have a couple of gripes though:

1.  The sockets are not quite deep enough, but they are adequate for most purposes.
2.  The most commonly used wrench could do with a longer length handle.
3.  The spanners are thin, undoing a tight bolt / nut hurts your hands so I tend not to use them.

However, sometimes it struggles to start with some 20secnds of cranking and various popping noises from under the bonnet. When it does this you can be sure it hesitates and "misfires" on the outward journey. Crank sensor wouldnt impact once started would it?

This morning though it starts on the button and is silky smooth, no hesitation. Nothing.

Any thoughts people?

Before I changed my crank sensor I had the slow starting issue, but never the missing though.  It now starts on the button and the EML light extinguishes immediately whereas it would stay illuminated for a short while after the engine had started prior to it being changed.

I would suspect the crank sensor as The Boy has suggested.
