Mega Problems
« on: 17 January 2008, 22:22:11 »

Hello everyone,

I'm still having problems with my 2001 2.0ltr GLS. The auto electrician has tested just about everything possible - got spark, fuel, crank and cam sensors fine, knock sensor, injectors all OK.

Yet it now struggles to start, it's knackered the cat (this has been temporarily removed as it was completely burnt to a crisp - this may have been a result of trying to keep it running when it was trying to packup whilst going along) but when it does start, it gets you 3 or 4 miles before it cuts out completly.

I've had new cam and crank sensors fitted and they have both tested OK. In previous replies it has been suggested the crank sensor maybe at fault. Is it possible it could faulty or no longer possitioned properly. When my problems started, changing the cam sensor fixed the problem for two weeks before it packed up again.

The only thing I can think of now is a fault ECU. The dash light has never lit except when I tested the cam sensor buy disconnecting it to see if the dash light worked. It was fine, but it has never come on in the last four weeks that I have had these problems.

Can anyone help because I'm at my wits end.  :(

Cheers.

Did you fit a genuine Vx cam sensor?

Aftermarket ones don't seem very successful.

There are not faults codes stored on the ECU and the EML has not lit once although it does work i.e. there is a bulb in it.

Apparently the 2.0 has a veined disc arrangement on the crank for the crank sensor.  If oil changes have been missed, the veins block and the crank sensor cannot "read" where the crank is.

Before I say anything else, I have not seen any evidence of this myself, I read it in the Cavalier section on the dark side.  Therefore, I cannot substantiate this statement but I am sure that somebody better than me will be able to confirm it.

How to sort this, I am not sure, but would suggest a good flushing agent such as Forte, followed by a couple of quick oil / filter changes  would be the first logical step.

Of course, this all assumes that the ECU is having trouble with the crank sensor...........

Have you thought about the Fuel pump relay / fuel filter / lines etc.??

I hope that this helps

Cheers x25xe,

I've swapped the fuel relays with my brothers vertra and it didn't solve the problem. There's fuel and spark and it only done 62k with a genuine full service history.

I'm thinking it might be a ECU problem  :(

Cheers

Im thinking it needs proper live data diag.....

It is worth checking the crank sensor is properly seated if not already done.....
