« on: 19 April 2014, 19:54:15 »

They occasionally squeal under light braking, Discs/Pads are 10 months old with plenty of meat on them...

Has anyone tried this stuff ? LINK

Might as well put the money toward some quality brake pads.

There are cheaper alternatives to that Wurth branded one...But i see what you mean.. I don't fancy changing the pads, Unless someone can recommend some pads no more than £40 say  :-\

Wow, that stuff is expensive!
Especially when a decent clean of the caliper and hub with squirt of brake cleaner, a scraper and wire brush, followed by a smear of copperslip on the back of the pad will do just as good a job. And you can use the copperslip elsewhere.

The universe will end in a puff of smoke if you don't buy genuine Vauxhall.

Seriously, like most lubricants, it really doesn't matter!

Why/how does copper slip on the back of the pads stop them from squealing?  :-\

My understanding is that copper slip reduces the squeal caused by slight moment of the pad under braking, often referred to as rattle - hence the term anti rattle shims that are often found on certain makes of pads. Sometimes, instead of shims, pad manufacturers use an anti squeal compound on the back of the pad, which looks like a crinkly substance. In this case, there is no real need to use copper slip, although I always use a minute amount as good measure. On the rear of VX replacement pads you may have noticed that only two pads have a riveted anti squeal shim on the back - this should go on the piston side with a smear of copper slip for good measure. Basically, copper slip does the same job as the anti squeal shims  or the anti rattle compound on the back of the pad.

My understanding is that the base is a high temperature grease - needed for brake pads - loaded with copper particles to aid heat dissipation/transference. Just to sing its praises even more, it's great for other areas where heat is an issue and you might want to disassemble again sometime: exhaust bolts, spark plugs, manifold bolts, etc.

On My BMW 320i for the past 4 1/2 years I always used ATE Plastilube silicone grease on the back of the pads and sliders. It stopped all the sequels dead in there tracks and I've never had a problem since.

I don't know if this is totally correct but my understanding is that if you get cooper grease onto your seals it will parish them over time. That is why I went over to ATE Plastilube in the first place.

Hope this helps.

How/why does any member not acquire tc access?

On one hand there's moaning about parts prices, on the other there's a refusal to use genuine parts. Because of prices. I don't get it.

Abs tc card costs 20/25(?) quid. You'll save more than the £20 on a 5 litr can of oil. Especially in conjunction with the 20lt 3 for 1 offer.

Those listed are upto Chassis number V199999, and for cars fitted with ATE calipers...

Later cars have Lucas calipers, which take a different shaped pad :y

That link is a generic image, but basically, ATE pads are kind of bat shaped, Lucas pads don't have any 'wings'...

One thing to note. It smells amazing, but is inedible. I'm forever tempted (woof)

Just as an aside. I once spent quite some time trying to fix squealing front brakes without success before discovering that the back brakes were the actual culprits. Sounded for all the world like it was coming from the front.
