I had my local halfords mix me up some rattle cans for my Elite, I need to spray my mirror cover, fuel flap, and replacement rear bumper.

Colour is z382 ural mountain

Now, on a 14 year old car I expect far from an exact match.

But the colour is totally wrong, it's much darker and nearly grey!

I went back, manager was very good and said his staff must have got the mix wrong, he then made me a can himself and told me to try it

It's a touch better but still waaaay too dark

What now? My instinct was to get vx paint from a stealer, but the local stealers say they can no longer get ural mountain

Any ideas welcome. But please no suggestions of a body shop

Nothing in the Car Plan range? (http://www.carplan.co.uk/index.cfm?page=1 their website implies 9000 different colours but only lists a few of them  )

I wouldn't want to paint a bumper with rattle cans! Small areas like the mirrors and fuel flap would be my limit. After that the cost is enough to make it uneconomic, let alone the likely poor finish and colour match.
If you must use cans, then get them from a trade paint factors, who will match them to your car.

Seriously, you should get a quote from a body shop for whom this would be an ideal fill-in job.

How about getting a local bodyshop to mix the paint for you and then you spray it yourself with an electric spray gun or air gun if you can borrow or hire one?  You'll probably get a better result than a rattle can.

clear laquer always lghtens the colour.but it sounds like its faded on the original colour coat,

avoid it.. because when it dries properly it will get minimum 2 shades darker




I must note the parts you will paint are all plastic so even with an exact match the final tone will be different.. why ? because plastic parts have different electrostatic loads so metal flakes will shape up / dry differently..


you can test the final color on test cards (sold in paint shops) before applying ..  but your color must be prepped by trial and error ..


and last note : sand the parts properly then spray plastic adhesion promoter wait 15-20 minutes then spray the primer before plastic adh promoter dries.. let it dry completely .. few hours than sand and paint it


ps: there are chinese made 0.8 or 1.0 micron cheapo hvlp spray guns..  if you have a compressor with 50 litre capacity those guns will spray much better than a rattle can even with an newbie hand.. just practice it.. and definitely use a mask

theoritically no... practically it depends on the layers sprayed, spray nozzle thickness , color and the painters style .. so may, may not..


but from practice after 6 layers (even with 0.8 micron) it wont .. (but no of layers will  )

year 2000 color number : M382 color code : 08
year 2001 color number : M382 color code : 3FU


it must be mixed in the machine..   there will never be a ready paint with that number and code.. 


but still there may be different mixture variants on standox and glassurite machines for the same paint..

If you can find a friendly 'smart' repair person they can 'measure' the colour your actually is now and mix appropriately.
