General Car Chat / connector locking tag
« on: 10 March 2020, 11:03:07 »

Yet again I struggle to remove a connector, because on the Vectra they all have blue locking tags. In the past I have struggled to dig them out and eventually got them off. Can someone please tell me how to deal with them with confidence and speed.

General Car Chat / Astra exhaust gone

Astra H 2008 petrol manual
Daughter in London rings up concerned about 'new noise'. Quickfit tells her it is blowing exhaust, quotes £440 to replace. That sounds hot to me, is that reasonable?

General Car Chat / SRS-AIRBAG SERVICE URGENT
« on: 22 February 2020, 09:37:46 »
The above message appears on the dash of a Volvo V70 on e-bay.
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Volvo-V70-2-4-turbo-petrol-/372950376682?_trksid=p2385738.m4383.l4275.c10
In my Rover Streetwise handbook it recommends changing the airbags after some interval, but of course by that time the car is worthless so no-one would ever do it. Also I know that on Vauxhalls a similar light can be brought on by careless repair that can only be turned off with a Tech2.
My question is - is iabove light an MOT fail matter?

General Car Chat / Any views on the Volvo V70 estate?
« on: 15 February 2020, 09:13:03 »
As header. I need an estate, the Honda Accord was the Which? best buy for used estates, but they consider fairly young vehicles. The advice from this forum suggests that for 10 years and older cars the Volvo would be cheaper to run - galvanised rust free bodies and older but rugged German engines. What are Volvos like to drive?

General Car Chat / Any views on the Honda Accord estate?
« on: 13 February 2020, 09:49:57 »
I feel I need an estate in the fleet, and my 2000 Omega estate is dying. Researching Which? used cars, the Honda Accord estate keeps popping as a Best Buy, and looking on e-bay they seem to be quite cheap and numerous. Have memebers any views?

General Car Chat / Any opinions of the Vauxhall Insignia?
« on: 05 February 2020, 16:46:36 »
I'm wondering how to replace my beloved 20 year old Omega estate, now that I am less able to mend cars. I quite like the Vectra, know little about the Insignia, though I did once drive one, that a guest had hired, seemed all right. Is there an estate version? Which engine is best? Are there any known faults? There is a 2017 1800 car, 30000 miles, at Glastonbury, for £7995.I presume that is the same engine as in my Vectra.

Omega General Help / Groping
« on: 02 February 2020, 16:54:05 »

"No more groping!", said the wife. Puzzled I replied,"Those days are over".
I have a new coolant leak on my last Omega. Peering up at the left hand bottom end of the radiator I see a damp patch. I have changed radiators before, but this forum has advised me to do no more heavy jobs liable to bruise my hands, lest I suddenly drop dead. Bother.

As heading. Alternator not charging, I was fitting a spare alternator, when I noticed a drip from the water pump. Has anyone changed one?

General Car Chat / Astra 2008 1.6 petrol manual fault code P0170

As above. This is my daughter's car in London. Any idea what P0170 refers to?

General Car Chat / Neighbour seeks advice buying a used van
« on: 02 January 2020, 13:07:59 »
A chum dropped into my print shop this morning; he has an 04 Astra, does building work, finds Astra gets dusty, reckons he needs a van, wonders what to buy, wants me to buy his Astra. He wants 3 seats, but not a big van, is looking at a diesel 2008 Citroen Dispatch at £1400.
I said I didn't want his Astra and know nothing about vans or diesels. Promised to enquire on this forum.  Please advise.

General Car Chat / Slight judder on pulling away in Vectra
« on: 29 December 2019, 15:30:13 »
2008 Vectra 1.8 manual petrol
As title, judder on pulling away. On earlier cars this was caused by soft or loose engine mountings. I have not known it recently on any other Vauxhall, either FWD or RWD. Any thoughts?

General Car Chat / Sprung hose clip failure
« on: 28 December 2019, 07:42:42 »
2008 Astra H 1.6 petrol manual
Yesterday I was called out by my daughter to Leigh Delamere services M4. She had been returning to London after her Christmas break, and had lost all her coolant when the hose at the bottom of the coolant header tank had come off. There was no sign of the hose clip. I replaced the clip and coolant and sent her on her way.

That car has performed faultlessly for 3 months, losing no coolant. Previous day it went to South Wales and back. I can only presume the sprung clip had fractured, something I have never known before. Any comments?

Omega General Help / Blowing exhaust manifold
« on: 22 December 2019, 11:19:24 »
1999 old shape 2.5 petrol manual estate
My last Omega is getting noisy, clearly has an exhaust leak in the region of the left hand exhaust manifold, which has a concealing shield around it.
MOT is due next April. I shall probably scrap it then, but should I consider the possibility of replacing the manifold? Car is not very rusty.

General Car Chat / P0301-01 Astra H 1.6 misfire no. 1 cylinder
« on: 14 December 2019, 21:26:35 »
2010 Astra H 1.6 petrol manual
engine light on code p0301-01 cylinder 1 misfire detected
Son Jonny popped home today, happened to mention engine light on, he assumed it was emissions. I plugged in diagnoser, up came the code P0301-01 cylinder 1 misfire detected. I could detect a misfire on pickup too.
I removed plug cover and ignition stick of 4 coils, and saw oil in cylinders 2 and 3, plugs barely visible. I sucked the oil out, then removed the coil assembly and all 4 plug. I washed them in petrol, plug gaps were all about 1mm, so I reduced them to 0.9mm, and reassembled. Misfire is still present, code soon reappears.
I presume I need to change the cam cover gasket and the plugs. I had hoped my cleaning of the plugs and coil sticks would have cured the misfire temporarily, but it has not.

Please advise.

General Car Chat / Vectra radiator temperature sensor leaking
« on: 06 December 2019, 20:28:12 »
2008 Vectra 1.8 petrol manual
I changed this radiator 3 months ago. I transferred the temperature sensor from old to new radiator. This is the sensor in the bottom tank on the right. I don't recall any washer or gasket, so presumed there was a tapered thread in the sensor. Does anyone know? I could tighten it, but do not want to split the bottom tank.
