Blower flap operning and closing
« on: 15 July 2006, 15:25:53 »

Ive asked this before but the problem still persists and is slowly driving me mad,

The problem im having is that when i switch my heater blowers on the front vents position for the air to blow in your face, is when i accelerate the blowers go off ,and when the car is not being powered like when you level off at a speed the blowers come back on again, You can also hear a flap shutting noise and evertime you put your foot down again the same think happens again and again.

Could it be something to do with climate control and engine vacuum??? I'm sure I read somewhere about the climate control being connected to the engine vac??
Does the fan go off or just the air to vent go off??

Both climate and rotary heater type are driven with vacuum...

As you accelerate the car, the fans go off, Then when the car is no longer under acceleration the fans come back on and you can hear a flap shutting noise from the drivers area   (quite loud)

100% it is a vaccum problem.

As load is placed on the engine the vaccum is increased. The fact the flaps are not working shows you have a leak.

It can be a swine to find but start by checking all the pipes are securely connected.
A common problem is the pipe that goes from the plenum to the brake servo.

It connects at the rear right of the plenum, ang oes round the back into the servo with 3 smaller vacuum pipes coming off it using T connectors.

Often this pipe will rub against the air con pipe at the right rear of the engine and cause a leak.

Also check the connection to the HBV is fine.

Checked all the pipes from the vacum box above the pollen filter , also the pipes that go into the bulkhead and they all seem fine...

Could it be the vacum box is faulty??? and how the hell do you remove it to change the damm thing??

Its a classic vac leak......if you remove the vac feed that goes to the vac tank, can you blow down it (you shouldn't be able to if the one way valve is working correctly)

In which case there must be a leak in between the vac tank and heater assembly....

Have you said which engine and year ?  It would help to know as there are some differences

Ive had this problem in the past, very annoying on a hot day !

There are three possibilities :--

1. Faulty non-return valve on vacuum input to reservoir
2. Leaky reservoir, either split body or one of the pipes is cracked where it joins the body
3. Leak from vacuum pipes AFTER the reservoir.

3. is most likely, trace the vacuum pipe which runs from the vacuum tank by the pollen filter to the rubber grommit in the bulkhead where the heater hoses pass through into the cabin, follow it all the way, feeling for any flat spots or other damage where it has rubbed on something. Most likely place is where the pipe passes through the wall of the pollen filter chamber. If you find a damaged spot you could try a smear of araldite to plug the hole or cut the pipe at the leak and use a rubber joining piece from a scrapper.

If 3. doesnt fix it then you will have to did deeper. You will need to get access to the end of the pipe going to the heater, on some cars there is a T piece near the heater pipes and you can disconnect it there, if not then dont pull it out of the bulkhead grommit, you wont get it back in easily. It is better to cut the pipe somewhere accessible and use a rubber joining piece.

Suck on the pipe going towards the heater, you should be able to pull a vacuum on this.
Suck on the pipe running from servo line to vacuum tank whilst keeping a finger over the pipe running to the heater. You should be able to suck all the air out of the tank and the non-return valve should keep the vacuum until you release your finger from the outlet pipe.

If you decide that the tank is faulty, dont try to get it out as it is welded to the pollen filter assy.  Aquire one from a 98> V6 which has an identical one screwed to the engine inlet trunking, just wedge it into a convenient corner.

Its worth updating your profile and adding the car info to it for future reference.

<The car is a 2.0 1998 ecotec>

In that case, have a really close look at the vacuum pipes where they enter the pollen filter chamber, especially where they touch the A/C pipe.

Doh..dont know if it has a/c
