Title: Switch or wiring?
Post by: BazaJT on 16 May 2018, 20:58:21
More often than not when I open the drivers door only one of the interior lights the one nearest the drivers side[the ones above the mirror]illuminates.Sometimes however they both light up,the dimming until off when closing/locking the door works as normal whether just one or both lights operate. Is this likely to be a fault with the switch that operates when opening/closing the door or a fault in the wiring somewhere?

Pop the cover off and check how well the bulb is retained in its holder and, if ok, use a voltmeter to check that there's power at the holder.
My 2p goes on the holder's being the culprit!

If my memory is any good, the switch actually provides the "earth" (or negative line), it is not a switched power line. Given the intermittent nature of the problem it might be worth cleaning up the area around the switch where the contact meets the bodywork, just to ensure a decent contact patch.

Correct.  & the driver's door has 2 wires going to 2 separate contacts

The fault, as described, suggests an issue within the interior light unit...

Start there :y

Doh! never thought that maybe the light unit/bulbs may be at fault :-[ :-[ will check that then and go from there. :y

There are actually 4 bulbs in it...

2 for map reading and 2 for door open/switched illumination...

With the doors closed and engine running, first check that the map lights work via the individual switches on the light unit. Then test that the general illumination works when you pull the headlight switch out.

If a single bulb does not illuminate, then replace that as per handbook...

If pulling the headlight switch out does nothing, then that is your issue  :y

Will give the map lights and head light switch function a quick check when I set off for work tomorrow :y

Checked the map reading lights yesterday, but forgot to try light switch :-[ anyway did that today the upshot is so far that the map reading lights work off the buttons[so that's good?]and pulling out the headlight switch turns on both the interior lights above the mirror but not those above the back doors-although I noticed that the n/s rear one doesn't work at all so will have to check bulb etc on that.

All good then...

Check the switch position on the rear light as per the manual... It might simply be switched off :y

Oddly enough DG in one of my brighter moments[they don't come along too often :D]I did think to operate the switch at the light but that still made no difference and I didn't have anything small enough on me to lever the light unit out so that'll have to wait until a later date.On a plus note all the door puddle jumper lights work :y
