2003 Astra Diesel Lock set

Help ! Been asked to look at a friends Astra, shes snapped the only key in the ignition & Dads drilled it out, whats involved in sorting this, new (second hand) lock set and reader, but then how do I program It, any advice greatly appreciated.

New or secondhand lock set with key, current keyfob should have a chip in it, swap locks then remote part of old key onto the horseshoe key bit of the new set, should be good to go

Shes binned the old fob, if i get a reader that comes with the new lock set, couldn't it be re programmed as though it had a new battery fitted to th fob, some are easier than others wife's Passat is quite simple. Its frustrating when electronics is all thats stopping it starting, I put in a Corsa D barrel I had lying around fits fine but nothing to read
