Ad blue
« on: 23 September 2016, 15:34:22 »

It appears to me that this stuff can be an expensive additional cost. At £3 a litre for about 600 miles and the faff of putting/getting it put in, I think it's a fickin nuisance.

Haha. Now my question is - what happens when you don't fill up with magic adblue? does the car 'know' it's empty, does it stop? Is there a sensor to light up the dash to say you need it filling up again? Also I love the 'the harder you drive, the quicker it runs out' thing - so the way to stop your DPF from clogging is to rag it a bit, but in order to save this magic fairy water from running out too soon you need to drive 'economically'

Nope I'm going to go in the old fart camp on this one  ;D

Now if there's a bottle of some adblue-like substance I can chuck in (like cataclean), to help emissions for MoT, that's cool.

If it runs out, you cannot start the car! Warns you long before though, but glad my VW does not have it...

Yeah. The warning light will only be based on level in the tank...not the contents.  ;D

If you're that much of a tight ar$e, it can be had on Amazon for £13 for 10L with free delivery.

At that price I'd rate the cost as pretty negligible. £1.30 for 600miles I can live with. Hell, if I lost some of my relaxed muscle I reckon I could save more than that in fuel?  ;D

The Merc 350Cdi has ad blue top ups as part of the service schedule  ;)

The Skoda both tells you how many miles range you have left (a tank lasts about 7000 miles of my commuting) and how much you can top up (right now it says 3.5-3.75L).

It is significantly cheaper if you can find a garage with an AdBlue pump (like a petrol pump but dispensing wee) and I think something like 60ppl..

It is the additive required when a diesel car is fitted with SCR (Selective Catalyst Reduction). It reduces NOx emissions.

Hgv have been using it for 5+ years, needed for euro5 and above, in its first incarnation, it was made with horse and pig urine, and was called urea.
It's now a synthetic substance.
There is software available that cheats the system, so you don't use ad-blue,.if you run out you can wee in the tank, or just put a bit of water in as a get you home.

It doesn't have p**s in it that's just a rumour that was started somewhere, it's made from crystallised synthetic ammonia, dissolved in  77% water.

Maybe, but crystallised synthetic ammonia is posh for urea....which is the chemical compound found in piss......so if you piss in the ad blue tank it may do the same job  :y

It might actually get the performance to useful levels, what with it running on near neat Stella Artois.

Poured about half a dozen cans of that down the sink today because they were about 3 years out of date so no, it won't be that. ;D
