Just about to clean breathers - gasket Q
« on: 11 November 2006, 18:51:12 »

Just about to clean the breathers using AA's how to guide.

I went to Vx this morning and asked for the 2 relevant gaskets.  The muppet in Parts was from Mars and didn't understand.

Techie was called for and he told the Martian I only need one the throttle body, which I'd already told him, but I couldn't remember the name of the other one.

I now know its the sump gasket, but can I leave this in situ, clean it and put back or must it be replaced?

Can't wait - I'll reuse existing gasket & if it leaks I'll change it next week.

If taking the sump off, it's only sensible to refit a new gasket....

Don't know what other gasket you could mean. You would need to replace the plenum O rings, but I dont think there are any other relevant gaskets, other than the throttle body. Sometimes the black box secures to the plenum with a gasket, but this is probably non essential.

You need the throttle body to inelt manifold gasket and.....the breather tube (back right of the engine) to block gasket (metal item from memory so you could use some flange sealent)

Just to let you all know the gasket is as Mark suggested a metal one fitted above the sump to a metal pipe.  Of course I didn't know this till I took it off, so it's now back where it started and I'll fit a new one during the week.

If you want to see a pic - just look at AA's excellent maintenance guide for cleaning the breathers on a 2.2.

Thanks guys - job done.
