Apologies for the nasty phone picture, that doesn't really do it justice. I'll take a nicer one when I get a chance.
It's a 2017 MY XE 25t Portfolio.
I was after something with a bit more usable boot space than the Omega, and started off looking at large hatchbacks. Was very tempted by the Mondeo. Huge amounts of space (more than I needed, TBH) but found it a rather uninvolved drive. Plenty of power and performance from the 2.0t petrol models but it felt a bit wasted on a FWD platform where you can't put much of it down on the road and can't really even tell when you're shredding the front tyres, I found. :-[
Decided I'd have to compromise a little on space and go for another RWD saloon. :y
Drove the XE and was immediately sold. You can throw it around like Mrs KW's MX5 and it handles beautifully, yet it's also refined, very quick and absorbs the bumps and potholes well.
With modern petrols now economical enough not to have to worry about LPG, the boot space is just about acceptable with the rear seats folded down. Thereby the snag. Folding rear seats were a £400+ option on the XE and they are a bit sparse on the used market, and not normally listed in the adverts. I ended up travelling to Brentwood to see this one (only to discover that it spent its previous life just up the road from me in Basingstoke). ::)
Anyway, back up there on the train today and took it for a little jaunt around Essex before traipsing around the M25 and back home. I love it. :D With 240 PS, an 8 speed auto box and 200 kg less weight than the MV6 it feels effortlessly quick in comparison. There is some turbo lag which can catch you out at times, and the auto box is rather eager to romp down the gears in the response to the loud pedal to try and get the turbo on song. Until you've got used to this, rapid progress can be a little uncouth but if you're a little more careful with the loud pedal it's very smooth.
Seats are very adjustable with memories, you can wind the seat down low in the chassis, which adds to the handling. I never feel happy "pressing on" in anything too "sit up and beg". The interior is black leather and very comfy. It's going to be another effortless mile muncher like the Omega, I'm sure.
Toys. It's got them. Loads of them in menus everywhere. No idea where to find most of the features yet. ;D Did manage to get the Meridian audio system working on the way home, and that sounds pretty decent.
It claimed an average of 38 MPG for today's jaunt which included a mixture of hooning around and pottering along in M25 traffic, so that looks promising.
You don't get the V6 sound track of the Omega but the 4 pot is pretty quiet and doesn't intrude much. For the performance and economy over the Omega I can live with that.
I suppose it doesn't really do bangernomics in the way that an Omega does, but then I failed to find any worthy replacement for the Omega that's newish (3-4 years old) that does. If this lasts me as long as the Omega has, then it'll have been a bargain. ;D
My LPG'd 3.2 MV6 will soon be looking for a new home.... :'(

Funnily enough, I’m on the lookout for a new vehicle but likely to be a company motor and another pickup....
Hacking about the kind of mileage I expect to do a company motor (likely to be fully funded) means that something that drops into the “commercial” bracket for BIK but still has the ability to take the family is a no brainier.

Not much to dislike about them. Apart from the price maybe. That car I saw was on 64 plate around 52,000 miles and he wanted £17k (dealer not private) :o ... Personal preference after trying a F30 330d xDrive and a 335d xDrive one of them will be my next car after the V8 Benz in a few years. They are quite something else to drive. Unless the XF depreciates better. We shall see ;D

and at that age it would have been the older, heavier and poorer handling X250..... :y

Good choice (I am of course biased).
The older Ford engine does have a bit of lag, try resetting the learnt values on the ZF8 as it may still be working to the previous owners driving style. From memory its an ignition on (with engine not running), press and hold the accelerator to the floor for 30 seconds and then ignition off (I usually do it with the accelerator still pressed).

Good to see that Kevin has demonstrated common sense by purchasing a potent 'sports saloon' that runs on a fuel designed by God himself, rather than the seminal fluid of the devil. :)

As already touched upon......the XE is a fabulous handling car. Superior to the X260 XF, which is better than the X250 XF. A healthy output 240 BHP in a relatively light car should provide a smile or two, and 300 BHP should be within easy reach with a bit of witchcraft. :y
The engine from my car plus an extra 100 BHP fits under the bonnet of the XE Project 8 so should fit a standard XE........no need to tell the insurance company. :)

Definitely have an XF / XE on my list when they appear in the banger category, always liked them. I helped a customer the other week with a 5series to discover to my horror it didn't have folding rear seats. I find this unforgivable in a car, for the new buyer you have the option of choice. But as you say, for used hunters you have to get what's available, though be interesting to see if there's the ability to retro fit them.
Honestly can't see any of the usual Germans replacing the Omega, a Jag will be on my list when the time comes. Good stuff :)

Seems par for the course with German cars in general. When looking for my Merc, just about every car was different, some had this, others had that, but rarely did did they have both.

Interesting you say the XF-S was tad firm and prefer BMW? I find BMW M140i M235i ride totally unacceptable, is the M (not true M) that harder compared to standard?
Good choice (I am of course biased).
One thing that puts me off latest Jags is the interior, the quality is not as good as the out going model. Can feel a element of 'cheap' in new XF interior, I far prefer the older one in terms of look and feel of it.

I plan to keep my 3.2 going long enough until ULEZ gets expanded further beyond current 2021 scope, which I suspect could be around 2024-ish?
Currently 6-8k per year getting to work, so unless something changes or blows up I plan to keep the old girl going.

Tested the 330d xDrive a few weeks after the XF give or take, Immediately felt more involved with the F30 3 series and was surprisingly a nice place to be as well (not as well equipped maybe). I was taken by surprise as i've not been a big fan at all of past BMW 3 series. It just felt right. like a glove... Comfort wise i found it better odly, Maybe because of the very supportive seats or pinpoint handling i couldn't say for certain from a 4 mile test drive. Much quicker than the XF as well especially in 335d xDrive guise. 0-62mph 4.8sec. XF-S Diesel is around 5.9 sec from memory? ...Quite an odd but satisfying feeling being in a fast diesel.
EDIT: It could be because they where xDrive models apparently they have a more forgiving ride.

Which one have you tried? I always found Uksaabs to be excellent. It's a bit quieter of late I think, and they are more 'up tight' than the OOF regarding politics, religion etc in general chat, but for car info I think they're excellent.
Overall I'd say there is a similar level of technical knowledge on offer there as here, although they don't have an organised Maintenance section/listing like the excellent one here. :y

The average MPG on my first tank is showing 38 so far. That's mostly fast A roads and mimbling along in commuting traffic but with a few "mad 5 minutes" thrown in.

I think I'll end up buying another Zafira Tourer, petrol one this time for MrsT's school run.
I'll use the diesel version for work.

The average MPG on my first tank is showing 38 so far. That's mostly fast A roads and mimbling along in commuting traffic but with a few "mad 5 minutes" thrown in.
I'm not used to seeing numbers as high as '38' on my trip computer (which is around 12% optimistic following a couple of brim to brim checks)... :'(
However, 38 MPG is a high enough figure to prove that 'baby killing diesels' are no longer necessary...... :) ::) ::)

I'm sure you'll soon realise that Jag fuel computers are like cheap watches. Apparently, according to the Jag forum brigade, we are unique with our Omegas have accurate fuel computers. Despite the fact that Astras, Vectras, Insignias, Zafiras and so on are also spot on.

They seem more concerned with BIGGER turbos and 3" down pipes, as said topics don't go off in a tangent, and no piss takin, no politics or anything as fun..as here. :)

I'm sure you'll soon realise that Jag fuel computers are like cheap watches. Apparently, according to the Jag forum brigade, we are unique with our Omegas have accurate fuel computers. Despite the fact that Astras, Vectras, Insignias, Zafiras and so on are also spot on.
Interestingly, the one on the F-Pace (X761) read about 1 mpg over, the XF (X260) was about spot on and the Velar (L560) about 1 mpg over.
Maybe the Gen 2.1 setup is an inferior algorithm to that used on the NLI and NGI later clusters

Possibly, but they are fairly consistently 10-15% optimistic...
...The cynic in me thinks this is intentional to save scaring the owner too much, knowing your average Jag owner will believe everything the car (and dealer) says.
I reset mine every fill, and know I have to crack 34mpg on the FC to break into the 30s in reality.

Yep. I parked it near a BMW 4 series the other day, so 2 recent cars trying to be practically the same thing. I think the BMW looks like something out of the 90's in comparison. So many fussy little folds and lumps and bumps whereas the Jag has nice clean lines.
It's practically the same footprint as the Omega, IIRC. Maybe slightly shorter and the wheelbase pushed into the corners a little more. Quite a lot of that is bonnet, though, so not as much space inside. ;D Access under the bonnet looks good, though. Not too cluttered, so should be an easy car to work on when the time comes..
Steering lock is not quite as good as the Omega's. I've been spoilt in that regard. Keep thinking I can make turns when I can't. ;D Still miles better than your average FWD shitbox, though.
Embarrassingly, every car I've ever owned has been blue. :-[ I was actually up for pretty much any of the colours they do in the XE. First one I test drive was white, which I'd normally avoid like the plague, but it looked fantastic, and I'd quite happily have had it but for the folding rear seats. This one came up in blue and it was the right car, and the 240 PS engine rather than the 200 as well, so there we go... It's actually a lovely colour. Looks like quite a flat, dark blue from a distance but it has some subtle flakes in it which catch the sun when up close.

Yep, it's not so bad if you don't mind tractors but finding something with a decent petrol engine does limit things a little.

Yup, a handsome car Kevin, and around 250bhp is a good number for a daily driver imo. Enough to make use of 95% of overtaking opportunities but (by the looks of yours at least) relatively cheap to feed. :y

That's been my opinion since I first saw them too. The BMW has lots of design. The Jag has style. Silver wheels and trim looks better particularly on a dark colour - the black trim and heels just makes the whole car look cheap.

Over the decades we have become very matter of fact about BHP outputs. When I was a kid any car with 100 BHP was considered to be 'a fine sporting saloon for the enthusiastic driver provided he had the appropriate amount of skill to handle such power'......think Lotus Cortina. :y
With 240 BHP Kevin's car has the same power as a late seventies Ferrari, such as the 308 GTB, so called because it sported a 3 litre N/A V8. How times change.
I have only driven a 2.0 derv XE given to me as a loan car. What a great handling device, it made my XFR feel antiquated and leaden (which it isn't)
And, as a bonus, as your car comes without the engine from a cement mixer......what's not to like. :y

I also need electric folding side mirrors and would like the larger navigation screen. The rear seats are apparently not as spacious as a F30 3 Series. Tough choice

So for me its a choice between a 340i and XE-S. As Kev pointed out, rear folding seats are a hard to find option. Steering lock is not quite as good as the Omega's. I've been spoilt in that regard. Keep thinking I can make turns when I can't. ;D Still miles better than your average FWD shitbox, though.
Embarrassingly, every car I've ever owned has been blue. :-[ I was actually up for pretty much any of the colours they do in the XE. First one I test drive was white, which I'd normally avoid like the plague, but it looked fantastic, and I'd quite happily have had it but for the folding rear seats. This one came up in blue and it was the right car, and the 240 PS engine rather than the 200 as well, so there we go... It's actually a lovely colour. Looks like quite a flat, dark blue from a distance but it has some subtle flakes in it which catch the sun when up close.

Yep, it's not so bad if you don't mind tractors but finding something with a decent petrol engine does limit things a little.

Yes, but naturally nothing German was under consideration, and it needed to be reasonably new but with a good chunk of its depreciation done, and from the era after car manufacturers realised diesel was dead and started putting some effort into designing efficient petrol engines with a bit of grunt...

How about neither? I like to think, in my younger days, I've done my fair share of ugly birds... ...you know, simply because they had a pulse. But I pride myself on the fact I've never done anything that ugly.
