Which oil filter please?
« on: 30 October 2009, 15:22:04 »

I Think I saw something about this recently, but to save me trawling through, can someone in the know just veritfy for me the correct filter for my 2.5 V6 please? is it the VOF93?

The oil is black and I don't know when it was last changed, I'm thinking of buying 1/2 dozen filters and cheap oil for a few changes at short intervals, then filling with Shell Helix Plus semi synthetic, what I usually use.
It's in for the MOT in a couple of weeks and I want everything as tip top as possible for then.

What are the correct/best spark plugs for this engine? I used iridium plugs in my MK2 MR2, which I sold to buy this Omega.

It depends on the year, early oneshave the metal type oil filters and the later ones have the paper insert ones. I would use Vauxhlls own 10/40 semi synthetic oil :y

Just an after thought, but who makes the Vauxhall Oil? As far as I'm aware, vauxhall don't make oil? so it will be bought from someone else who does.
I've used Shell helix for some time now, I also use exclusively Shell fuel, I always used V.Power in the MR2, when I got the Omega I put standard unleaded in, I changed to V Power 2 weeks ago and the car runs better now, smoother and pulls better.

It's the least expensive VX semi on Ebay, 4X5ltr cans £39.95 + postage of £9.75 . I didn't check the postage on the other offers there, but the next cheapest was £40 for 4X5ltre cans.
Any info on the spark plug question? The iridium ones I found are BKR6EIX for my car £48 for 6 plugs...free postage.

Says 4x5l but in quantity says 1 of 4 available. 4 cans of 5l for £40 doesn't sound too bad. 1 5l can at £40 sounds like robbery. All a bit vague for me to part with cash.

They're Iridium ones...not standard plugs, I can get plugs for a quid each too at my local spares shop. The Iridium ones for my MR2 cost me £34 for 4.

I don'ìt like putting cheap crap in my engines, I only want the cheap oil to flush out the cheap crap someone else put in. Look after the car...and it will look after you, never had a breakdown yet..except a wheel bearing on a Transit, and fuel filter on a Rover V8.

GM plugs are made by Bosch so good stuff really, its cheaper to buy them from VX then buying the equivalent bosch part. No real benefit to buying spark plugs at daft money imo :)

Standard plugs are good for up to 25,000 miles, Iridium ( and Platinum) are made of precious metals( the electrodes), iridium is one of the densest of metals, these plugs keep their gap and efficiency for up to 60,000 miles, create a stronger spark, better running engine.

Its £1ish  each for the GM plugs which on paper last 20k, don't belive all the marketing bull about those other plugs.

3.2 V6's run just fine on stock GM plugs, no need to waste your money on 60k iridium ones, i bet if you got in a the exact same car with GM plugs vs iridium you will not notice any difference.

You can look at it that way if you want Tunnie, with most things these days you do get what you pay for, also there are advertising standards a company has to consider if it wants to stay in business, ...I probably won't notice the difference if i put £4.95 for 5ltrs supermarket oil in the car, or Mobil 1, but I might later on down the line!

But changing a set of plugs every 20-25k at a cost of £12 is one thing when they start to go put new ones in, going cheap on oil is false economy all round, all manner of problems can be had.

All tunnie is saying is that most members on here use VX semi synthetic oil its cheap enough (even for quick changes) and its dosent mayo up (castrol) on the V6's as much.

Agree with you here the same plugs cost £2-£3 each more from Halfords. The last 2 set from Vx(45k) caused no problem and did what it said on the box

GM plugs are proven, loads of V6's doing 200k+

I'd rather replace my plugs each year with GM ones, than go for 4 years on the same 'high performance' ones.

At the end of the day its your money.

Don't get me wrong there Dave, I wasn't slighting the GM oil, not by any means, I'm sure Vauxhall wouldn't put rubbish in their cars, I'm not even saying I won't use it myself...I agree cheap oil is false economy...it's the life blood of the engine. But all the components have an effect on the engine's condition...including the plugs and fuel, black sludge is caused by cheap oil and cheap fuel, not enough detergents in the fuel, to keep the costs down they reduce the additives, effects the valve seats etc, plugs effect the burn efficiency of the fuel in the head, which also affects the valves, piston crowns & bores.

What's better full synthetic or semi ?

Fully Synth only of use in very, very high performance engines. V6 Semi Synth is fine.

4.8L for 4 pot oil changes, 5.5L for V6.

Oh yeah 5.5L....thats where I got the 6L from, when I checked it out I remember thinking I would have to buy 6 litres as 5 wouldn't be enough.

Ken.Join Autobahnstormers for £20 and  they will send you a Vauxhall trade club card. You can then buy 20 ltrs of VX 10-40 semi for approx £35 as already mentioned. This oil is absolutely fine for your engine and at thet price can be changed at around 4,000 mile intervals ,which is what the experts on here reccomend.Same goes for the filter, approx. £1.50 on trade card and can be changed every 4,000 with the oil.Use what plugs you feel happy with but my VX (Bosch) plugs have done over 30,000 miles and given no trouble.
The trade card also allows you to buy many other parts at very low prices, worth every penny. :y

As Tunnie said,no advantage in paying the extra for fully synthetic, waste of time in a standard road engine tbh.I use VX semi in my bike engine without problems and it regularily revs to over 13,000. ;)

Yeah Albs I do intend to join The ABS, got a lot of expense tho' at the moment...on a tight budget, but all points noted, thanks.
Be careful using car oil in a bike engine, the majority of bikes have a wet clutch, ( runs in the oil) and car oil has anti-slip properties which bike oil doesn't because of the clutch, you should really only use bike oil in a bike.

According to Mark DTM,VXsemi doesnt have friction modifiers added so it shouldnt cause any problems.I think a lot of bike specific oil is snake oil really,4 ltrs of semi synth for about £30.A total rip off imo. :y
