It has nothing to do with the engine lengths. The LS1 5.7 liter V8 is a 90 degree engine. It's based on a decades old OHV design made during a time when American cars were much wider. The Commodore had to be widened to accommodate the larger V8 and its ancillary components. The L87 3.0 V6 is a 54 degree engine. This engine was a clean sheet DOHC design and never a shortened V8. The Omega was designed to use this compact V6.

Unlike Great Britain, Australia is a vast country with long distances between cities much like the United States. Its cities aren't as compact as those in Europe. Australians don't need their vehicles to be as small. Like Americans, if given a choice, Aussies prefer larger cars with more interior room and V8 engines. That's why Holden pumped the Omega up and called it the Commodore.
