Hi.

In an earlier thread I talked about the fact that my omega cuts out at random intervals and wont restart for 10 - 60 minutes. Well it finally gave up the ghost the other day. We thought it would be the crank sensor. Called the AA out and after tests he blamed the immobiliser. Next day we called Green Flag out and they came up with the same. Had it towed to Vauxhall garage. They tested all the sensors and they were fine. They think it is the ECU being faulty.

Can I have some advice on buying a replacement ECU second hand? I have seen some on Ebay but don't really know what I'm looking for. Can I choose any ECU that has come off a 1998 2.5V6? Would it need to come with keys or can my originals be re programmed to the new ECU's Immobiliser?

IIRC you should be OK with an ECU, Key Chip and transponder from a 2.5 or 3.0 from a mini facelift. I would wait for confirmation of this though. Markey Mark has got them for sale in the for sale section at a good price

Just to add, if you get all 3 from the same car you won't need any reprogramming

Vauxhall who have the car at the minute says the ECU is fine 

They reckon that fault code 17 came up indicating a Knock Sensor. Not sure how true this is but they said they need to take the cambelt covers off etc to investigate. So far the work has cost £250. I've told them that if the final price goes over £300 then they can keep the car or I will scrap it.

I would be telling Vauxhall that if they say its such a fault, they repair it and it still does not run right, that I will not be paying

Sounds like they're guessing. I wouldn't let them waste any more time on it, TBH.

A faulty knock sensor would raise a code but wouldn't stop the engine running. Not sure why they need the cam belt cover off either.  :-/

The actual wording they gave me was "Timing Sensors" :-/

Hmm. There are two timing related sensors on the V6. The crank sensor (already covered?) and the cam sensor. If the latter fails you will get a code raised on the ECU and maybe limp-home mode will be activated but it won't cut out.

What it is worth doing, IMHO, is checking that the wires to the knock and cam sensors haven't been trapped or damaged during a cam belt change, for example. In fact, check the entire engine loom for damage.

Vauxhall now reckon it is the Cam sensor and are taking it off to test. They said if it comes back as ok then it is deffo the ECU.

I certainly wouldn't believe RAC/AA/acme breakdown co. Or a Vauxhall dealer for that matter.

I agree. Crank sensor is the root of all evil, Vauxhall are certainly not the ones to be paying all that money, far too expensive. Any OOFers near you?
