5/6 speed auto box
« on: 09 November 2018, 23:15:04 »

Apologies if this has been covered before but are there any newer eg 5/6speed auto boxes that will mate easily to the 2.6 v6. Current have a 2.6 v6 auto but the engine seems wasted on the 4 speed auto box. Loving the car bur not sure about the autobox!

You only need lots of gears in an autobox when you have a narrow power band. This is why modern diesels have them. A multi valve petrol engine that will happily rev to 6500rpm but is tuned for torque simply doesn't need 6 gears. Nor does it need a close ratio manual gearbox.

The V6 engine and gearing is an excellent match for a road car.

Although an extra gear for cruising wouldn’t go amiss ;)

The box from the Vectra C/Insignia 2.8 will bolt straight on... Absolutely no use in an Omega though ;D

The Omega does need more ratios in its gearbox. 2nd is way too long, covering up to 85mph on a 3.0/3.2 (bit less on a 2.5/2.6 due to different diff).

But retrofitting would be nigh on impossible, as even once you'd sourced the mechanical bits, you'd still need a custom TCM and be able to program it...

Opel did fit a 5 speed auto to a few cars.

Only the full fat Dti 2.5 BMW lump... Different bell housing and getting the gearbox and engine ecu to communicate could be 'interesting'

The Cadillac CTS 3.2 (same engine) 2003/2004 has a 5 speed 5L40E.

Does the gearbox have stand alone management  :-\

The V8 stuff is integrated into the engine ecu...

What engine management ECU is used on the CTS, and also what TCM ecu?

Same ECU as the Omega 3.2 / 2.6
TCM same as the Omega 2.5 DTI with the 5L40E
But probably with some different firmware in both.
Only difference is with the CTS 5L40E is that the selector handle axle is on the other side.
