Whilst I never had the proper nack to this, I've hit a small roadblock to my work having completely forgotten quite how to do this.
How does the throttle cable ball end come off ?
I can move a clip back towards the out sheath but the cable remains firmly attached - and I want it all right out of the way.
I'm thinking the cruise cable will simply wiggle off when the above is clear (?)

Should be a tiny wire clip going through the ball, fiddly little bugger

Tiny little flat head, to wiggle under the paper-clip style thing holding the ball on. Be super careful as it can easily ping off never to be found again, so put your hand/fingers over it as you wiggle the clip off.

And a small paper clip will suffice

About how I remember it, but it isn't shifting.
I have been pushing the 'wire-end' (flat driver) in and pulling the metal ring part backwards (along the cable) - about 1mm is as far as its going (but though enough). So the right idea (?)
Rained off now, so will have another go tomorrow.

You have to completely remove the spring wire clip, as I expect you have done. Then it will come off, I have known them hard to remove, the spring clip is only a security device. If you grip the cable end with a pair of pliers and twist sideways, it will come off.

the wire-end is what holds the joint together, and the ring holds the clip in place.
Push the wire-end out of its hole while releasing the tension on the ring, which rotates around the end one it's free. It doesn't come off along the cable.

The clip you need to remove is similar to this ....

You unclip the circular bit then pull it along the direction of the cable to remove it. Even when this is removed, the ball won't always easily come out of the cup.

In fairness, the straight part of the clip isn't very true and may have been the stuborness but I've never been able to just whip them off.

Put a small blob of grease into the cup before you assemble it :y
