That was quite something. :y

Loved the "100" formation of 22 typhoons.

Thought PA474 was routing back over me for a minute, then she turned and overflew Basingrad instead. >:(

Looked pretty good over Witham, and oh, the sound of that Lancaster!  8) 8) 8) :y

Ron.

P.S. Far too much of the god-botherers in the BBC coverage; we want REAL pilots, not sky pilots.

That's interesting Ron. You obviously missed an interview the BBC did in their coverage, shortly after it started at 0915, with two Bomber Command crew, both who served on Lancs; one as a tail gunner (how did any of them survive, although I knew one personally) and the other a navigator. Very great, interesting men.  The BBC also heavily outlined the history from Lord Trenchard forming the RAF in 1918, and then how the RAF lost 110,000 during WW2, half of that (55,573) in bomber Command alone. :'( :'( :'( :'(

Interesting stuff, and I hope the young were allowed to watch it all in their schools, as those old boys - hero's - and sources of primary historical reference are disappearing fast!

Do you really think that todays children are remotely interested in the history of the RAF? Or either of the world wars? I can tell you, they are not.

Don't underrate the children of today, just because a minority are completely [breakless]** and care for fxck all! ::) ::) :D :D ;)

I am trying to type f-e-c-k-l-e-s-s, burt keep getting "breakless"!!

I'm not underrating them, Lizzie, I am stating fact from my experience. My wife is head of a Church of England school, 500 children and 97% of them are Muslim speaking over 30 different languages. The are not breakless, as you put it, they are innocent little children. What interest would they have in something like this? My son has no interest in wars that happened 70 and 100 years ago, and I don't expect, nor want, him to.
The world is a totally different place and, while we of a certain generation might want to remember the dead, they have no concept of what it means, and I am not about to educate them.

FFS, it could even make them think that we're still important in the world, when all we are is yesterdays news.

My two examples are just two random ones that I can think of. But I was 'out and about' during this mornings 'celebration' and, I would suggest, was most of the country, esp. the young.

No more to say. Those who lost their lives were heroes, but I don't want, or expect, todays youngsters to have to pay homage to them.

I understand completely where you are coming from STEMO and I think most of us would love to not have to think of wars ever again.

But, unfortunately, man loves to war, and especially the Muslim children you mention will think of the wars going on currently in much of the eastern Islamic world.  For all children (and at the bottom of my post I explained I wanted to say "f-e-c-k-l-e-s-s, but the OOF didn't want to show that word!) they do need to know what war is, the awful truth about the biggest mistake mankind can make, and what exactly it does to everyone involved.  Then, MAYBE, the new generations will not repeat the errors of history and highlight to them that it is the young who have to fight and suffer the most.  No more do we want war glamourised, so that young men join up in 100's of thousands to have a "jolly" and "exciting" war against who ever our country has fallen out with and failed, diplomatically, to resolve the major issues. That is what happened in 1914 as young men were excited about having a go at the Hun, with it all being over before that Christmas!

Imagine a world again, without the knowledge of the effects of war, going joyfully to war as the young have never been taught what can happen in a day, let alone over years, with 20,000 of their kind killed in one day, and in future wars possibly millions in a day.

When children are old enough they need to know the horrors; maybe then we can eradicate that form of extended diplomacy, but only if everyone continues to understand what war is.

That is my opinion coming from a military family who suffered war losses, and also fully understands what my pacifist, but a senior Royal Navy NCO, believed after having his father blown to bits by a German bomb.  He always said it was better to be red than dead, but wanted all the young to understand the terrors of war.

My 14 year old loved watching it on TV, helpfully on an inset day.
But he does love that sort of stuff, and in Air cadets has been known to let other people have a go when he knows too much history ;D

My Grandfather George Parsons was a driver/mechanic in the RNAS during the First World War and was transferred to the RAF when it was formed.  :y

Treated to our own personal airshow at Tunnies Towers yesterday, 2 Apaches overhead for a hour or so, then what must have been all the Chinooks that took part.

We are right next door to Sandhurst Military Academy, I think they have approval for low
Flight? As they come in mega, mega low over our house.
