Poor air con performance
« on: 16 May 2017, 18:10:42 »

Hi guys, it was 25deg outside today and all air con could do was warm air coming out the wents. Both fans are spinning when AUTO is pressed, both stop when press ECO. Tried vacuum one hour after engine was running , hissing  when I dissconnected vacuum pipe  so not vacuum related.
Should I regass it for a start?
Also, I reset it by holding AUTO and OFF buttons for 5 seconds - to no avail.

Regas might save it if the front fans come on with Auto. Economy switches Aircon off.

Also worth checking that the heater motors actually move when the temperature is adjusted ;)

Heater motor is running consinstatly with adjusting temperature so that's ok, right?
If I set it on LOW it blows like crazy...but warm

Does the front of the compressor spin with Auto and stop with Eco ?? .. if it does NOT spin at all on Auto then it could be low on gas .. :)

The outer pulley spins all the time the engine is running, when auto selected AND SUFFICIENT GAS PRESSURE REMAINS then the compressor clutch will engage and the compressor will start to run, which can be seen by the whole front rotating

If it's blowing warm on auto you prob need a regas.

Ps, you can tell very easily if the system is functioning. If the revs at idle are around 600 then your compressor is kicking in and should be putting out cold air. If at 400 it's not. Time to regas. Or at least try to....... if it won't hold a vacuum on the attempt to regas you are then looking for a leak. That's assuming there isn't then some electronic fault causin the compressor not to kick on.

Revs are around 550 so I believe compressor kicks in every time, Webby

I checked and compressor kicks in (rotates) when AUTO is pressed. Dissengages - stops when ECO is pressed.

I checked and compressor kicks in (rotates) when AUTO is pressed. Dissengages - stops when ECO is pressed.

Then there is sufficient gas in the system for it to run, but perhaps not efficiently.

Next step, run the aircon in auto for about 5 minutes then feel the two large pipes that go to the cabin, one is cold fluid in, the other is the return. The cold one should be VERY cold within a couple of minutes running, if it IS then the problem is possibly at the evaporator end (inside the cabin), if it is NOT, then the system could be low on gas and inefficient, or a problem with the condensor, in front of the radiator.

Inside the cabin are a couple of possibilities, the first one being that the heater control is actually selecting "warm" not "cold" and mixing hot air from the heater with the cold air from the evaporator.... a faulty HBV can do this

The part I'm holding on the pic should be cold,  but it's the same temperature as the exit pipe - luke warm
