General Discussion Area / Legendary average speed camera placement
« on: 06 December 2018, 20:29:01 »
Not very often that something like average speed cameras really make me laugh.

Travelling across the old Severn Bridge this week, going up the slip lane from Aust to join the motorway, road works sign, average speed camera sign and the first camera at the top of the slip lane.

The second and only other camera is just the other side of the toll booths.

Oh dear,

Omega General Help / Another part NLS
« on: 20 October 2017, 19:20:10 »
Been working around the little bits of panel rust left and thought I would tackle the seam underneath the mouding on the rear 3/4 above the rear bumper. Yes there was a rusty seam, so glad I have got to it.

9148386, the plastic "break on removal" trim clips (10 in total according to the diagram but I have 6 either side on mine) that hold the moulding onto the rear wing are NLS on the Vauxhall system.

So is there another potential source for them ?
Where are we in the event of breakage through collision damage ?
Has anyone worked out a way of modifying them to get them to grip the pin again when 1 or more of the plastic tongues have inevitably snapped off ?

Omega General Help / Removing rear brake discs
« on: 12 July 2016, 20:22:58 »
Left hand rear hub was getting a bit hot. I suspected a failure within the handbrake mechanism as the lever has developed some free play. Slackened everything off but could not shift the disc or find a shoe release lever. Resorted to 3 leg puller which I'm sure shouldn't be the case.

Found both shoe retaining springs were off so have bought handbrake rebuild kit - admittedly they may be off because of my method for removing the discs.

What's the preferred method for getting the discs off and how do you get to the rearmost retaining pin?

Omega General Help / Alternator service life
« on: 28 June 2016, 07:28:57 »
Alternator no longer giving out any charge. I suspect the regulator pack but am happy to replace the whole thing. Is 127K attached to a nice low revving diesel engine near enough to the end of it's service life to justify total replacement ?

Omega General Help / Fitting F/L elite seats.
« on: 04 December 2015, 11:44:14 »
A couple of quick questions. What's the part no. for the longer bolts please?

And, when modifying the wiring loom for the driver's seat does the maintenance guide mean stripping the insulation from a small section of the 2 browns and soldering them together and likewise for the 2 red/1 black ?

Thanks

Omega General Help / Mystery electric window operation
« on: 22 October 2015, 08:38:20 »
The near side rear window goes down of its own accord but never when you're in the car. Rain might be contributing factor but I've doused the door and can't get it to go down myself.

Any ideas for the best places to start looking ?

Thanks

General Car Chat / Removing snapped plastic connector
« on: 08 September 2015, 07:41:14 »
Not on the Omega but on my Corsa. Coolant pipe from top of water pump to throttle body on a batch of 1.2s was joined to the water pump housing via a plastic connector which fractures. It's a threaded fitment and has sheared off flush to the housing. It looks like an M8 thread.

Suggestions for the safest way of removing it without stripping the whole of the front of the engine off ?

Thanks

Omega General Help / Removal of rubber seal along sill
« on: 26 May 2015, 17:11:24 »
Having a rustathon. I need to remove the metal backed rubber seal that runs along the length of the sill which the lower edge of the doors seal against. A quick search suggests that the rubber bit just unclips but I need to get the metal backing off too. How is it fixed onto the car ?

Thanks

Omega General Help / omega a evolution500 springs
« on: 24 February 2015, 09:48:11 »
Looking to lower/stiffen the front of my 2.2Dti. Knowing that MV6 front springs are now nla, will these do as an alternative?

Omega General Help / Front subframe bolts
« on: 13 February 2015, 16:56:01 »
Are these angle tightened for accuracy or because they are stretch bolts?

I have a little derusting job to do for which I need to loosen off the steering box and lower the o/s/r corner of the front subframe. I have tools to get into small spaces for derusting so I don't need to drop the components off completely.

Does anyone have a torque setting for the steering box bolts please?

Any tips for working in this area gratefully received.

Omega General Help / 2.2 DTI estate exhaust centre section
« on: 28 January 2015, 09:50:34 »
The car I picked up last w/e has virtually no top to the small box roughly under the driver's seat. Is it a silencer or a resonator?  This has a distinct bearing on how I go about replacing it.

Thanks

Omega General Help / Broken heated rear window
« on: 11 February 2014, 08:20:12 »
Thought I'd sort out why I only had 1 group of four elements working on the HRW. Checked for continuity across the whole element, side to side, top to bottom and line by line which was fine, so gave the two contact blocks on the window a very gentle wiggle and they both proceeded to fall off.

I tinned each leg and gave a short press with 40W soldering iron and blew the silver off the window. After lots of attempts and a good thick dose of silver electric element repair fluid I got them all to stay and araldited them over for good measure. Continuity through all four legs with a max reading of 0.2 ohms, which I reckoned was therefore a pretty good joint.

Anyway, relay clicks and no HRW at all now. Only thing I haven't done is checked for live voltage, but I need no rain which is clearly a bit of issue at the moment.

Do I just give up and buy a new tailgate as the line of least resistance (sorry), or does anyone here have a cheaper and lighter solution.

Omega General Help / MV6 springs NLA
« on: 31 January 2014, 11:56:40 »
As the title suggests. V6 lsc front springs now NLA from Vauxhall. Also NLA from main motor factors around Bristol too. Am off to measure current ride height to see what the nearest replacement is. Have a suspicion that -30mm won't be that different to what's there at the moment which is very very baggy.

I know the fronts should be about 660mm, but what should standard rear non self levelling estate ride height be?

Omega General Help / Best clutch
« on: 01 July 2013, 16:31:11 »
Time to replace the clutch on my 2.5 V6. Just phoned the dealer. £144 TC on exchange but there's none on the network. Alternatively IRO £550 TC new. I've bought a genuine GM slave as I've had too many issues in the past with dodgy aftermarket hydraulics but who makes the Omega clutch or what's the best equivalent to OE spec?

Thanks

Omega General Help / Random stalling
« on: 18 March 2013, 18:17:17 »
Herman's latest trick. Sometimes it'll idle for a few seconds then stall, othertimes it'll idle indefinitely. Sometimes the ICV reacts quickly enough to keep it running, sometimes not. Very occasionally it feels like it's missed a beat while you're driving along. Mostly when it's going to stall the idle drops to about 250 then dead, othertimes it just dies. The only constant I can find is that it never does it on cold start in raised rpm phase.

Manual box.
Paperclip test shows the usual 12 & 19.
ICV is clean and lubricated and pipework/joints are sound.
All the other sensor connections are good.
The battery terminals are tight and clean.
No other wiring has been touched.

The only fault is that the vacuum pipe to the charcoal canister is disconnected as I snapped the plastic lug off the re-breathing assembly where the solenoid is at the back of the plenum when cleaning the breathers a little while ago when I changed the plugs as well.

When it stalls it always restarts immediately and the crank sensor was new about 2K miles ago.

What else do I need to look at?
