If we ignore the trip and the fuel gauge, he could have just coasted downhill in neutral for a mile or so, I suppose.

Mine tells me fairly regularly that I've done anywhere between 28-32 MPG in a 2.6 V6..

That uses more fuel than keeping it in gear

So the Velar this week did 52mpg on the commute (that's for the full door to door trip, about 70miles).

I even did a 20 mile trip up the Fosse in a 405 (BIG Range Rover - SV special with full exec pack in the back, so weighs the same as the moon) petrol PHEV (although the PHEV battery was flat), driving like an old lady, 31mpg  ???

My 2007 Range Rover Sport TDV8 does exactly as described in the manual 25mpg in town 31mpg on a run , towing the 26ft twin axle caravan down to 22mpg all acceptable to me. The best mpg I had from a diesel was my Mazda6 ranged between 46-62mpg.

My Volvo goes into N going down hill on its own, and on the flat, most modern trucks do Eco-roll

That has never made sense to me... It's like switching OFF a 500+ bhp brake ::)

Yep, most engines just cut fuel on the overrun these days so it's a bit daft to take them out of gear.

With cruise set, the vebs keeps it in check,   no cruise on no Eco-roll, you can st the over run to 110k, set mine at 100k.
