Title: £4000 for your Omega.
Post by: 2boxerdogs on 08 June 2019, 13:03:33
Just driven past my local Vauxhall dealership & they've got a dark green Omega amongst all the newish cars on the forecourt , it has £4000 sprayed on the side of it advertising their scrappage scheme so good time to get rid of the old barges.😀

"£4000 towards your finance deposit"
and only on certain models
good time to get rid of the old barges.😀
OR
spend some time and money extending the life of the "old barge" saving thousands of pounds and enjoy luxury motoring for years to come  ;)  ;D

Trouble is, like when previous scrapped schemes are on,  cars that aren't destined for the grave yard in the sky end up bring traded in for the so called 'good deal'. Once part of the scrapped scheme, there's no going back. The car cannot go back on the road, even if it is totally roadworthy.
The scrapped scheme is just another ploy to get new cars out of the showroom. If customers actually sat down and worked out how they are paying per annum, against the depreciation, then I'm sure it would be an eye opener for them. A good 3 year old car is financially more viable, but the stigma of a brand new car on the drive is more important for some than the financial side of it.
It's also geared to the monthly outlay - the only question salesmen ask is  'How much do you wamt to pay a month Sir?' and the total cost payable over the term by the customer is rarely mentioned.
But that's what the majority of people consider - the monthly outlay.  A bit like a mortgage - how much is it going to cost each month not for how long, or the total expenditure, which is frightening...

Personally I wouldn't touch any of these "special deals" with a barge pole I'm as, who anyone knows me financially astute ..😀 and would rather drive a bargain than a eurobox.

I've looked into PCP deals and they are a very expensive way of not owning a car.

They only make (some) sense if you make they final balloon payment which 90% of people don't.

Dealers have little interest in selling cars. They have far more interest in selling expensive finance and ridiculous overpriced add-on crap such as paint and alloy wheel protection. :-\

I also would not touch these offers ;)

OK you get £4,000 against a new car, but then have still thousands to pay, including a huge amount of taxes, then immediate thousands of pounds depreciation as you drive away from the forecourt!

Replace my Omega for just £4,000; no thanks!! ::) ::) :P

Does any mainstream manufacturer make anything worth buying new? Just been looking at the astra K 1.6 cdti estate, £27K for the elite. In three years and 30,000 miles you will get one for 8-9K.

Yes when for similar money you could have this! (https://www.pistonheads.com/regulars/ph-spottedykywt/the-30k-v8-f-type-spotted/40314)  8)

Although I doubt they will give you £4000 for an Omega!  ;D

Trouble is if a F type doesn't meet your needs car wise but an Astra does then where is the point in wasting your money on the F type?

Yes I can quite see how an F type would need to be endured, two seater which is no good to man nor beast, ugly as sin and horrendous road tax[or whatever they're calling it this week] ::)

The deals do work for some people.

For example, big bro (being a bit radio rental) likes his big Mercs, but is sensible enough to not want one beyond a couple of years old.  So he gets a 2 year deal or a few hundred quid a month, and hands back at the end.

The £16k he pays over 2yrs is far less than the depreciation on buying one...

I suppose we all have different priorities. £16k for 2 years' motoring doesn't sound like much of a bargain to me. I spent less than half of that on my Omega and it's lasted me 12 years and counting.

Quite. It sounds like a bum deal to me. But he "must" have a S-Class for some reason I can't grasp, and given that, I do have to concede that his way is the cheapest way to achieve that.

Ok.....so £16000 over  2 years is around £700 each month........so not buttons.

But as mentioned there is the depreciation to be considered.

What Merc does that money give him? ........not a 2 litre derv, I hope. :)

Doesn't your brother have a business? Can he not use the car for company business and get a tax write off?

Unless you want to go full milk float, Company Car tax (if you're a higher rate tax payer at least) is absolutely epic, to the point where I don't know why anyone who can operate a calculator would choose to have one.   :-\

you paid a premium , but that included a private plate, provenance of history etc
Omega prices are slowly going up for decent cared for cars.
Vauxhalls will never command the money that rusty old Fords make though , ;D
but many people pay for brand new cars and loose £5k in depreciation in one year alone  ::)

Every Omega I've had has been a decent investment IMHO.  The first cost me just under £3200 in 2003, and served me well for 14yrs.  Thats less than £300 a year depreciation.  TBE cot a little more, though sub £4k, and is still giving good service.  All the others I've made more back from by selling than I paid.

But none were destined to be a classic in 30yrs ;D
