General Car Chat / Can't open the car.....
« on: 23 January 2015, 18:09:39 »
Neither key, main nor spare, unlocks the doors - batteries ok as the LEdflashes, and I cannot open the door mechanically with the key.
Too cold and dark now to mess about, but if it's due to low car battery, is there a way to open the bonnet to charge it?

Omega General Help / Is it the scuttle drain?
« on: 22 September 2014, 14:08:23 »
Yesterday, I found the rear nearside foot-well full of water, and as I park nose-up on a sloping drive t obviously came from the front - carpet wet there, too.
On Saturday we had a tremendous thunderstorm with torrential rain and I'm hoping that since the water didn't smell of anti-freeze, it was rainwater on the carpets.
Is it reasonable to assume that a full nearside scuttle drain would be the cause? I had a good look in daylight today but hardly any water visible, but there was some debris on what looks like a big rubber grommet at the bottom.
Any comments, help or advice would be appreciated please, gents.

General Car Chat / You meet the nicest people on OOF!
« on: 20 August 2014, 11:14:15 »
Yesterday I met "humbucker", to pick up an AR 35 autobox, then on to "serek", who fitted it for me.
Both extremely nice chaps, and despite having to kill 4-5 hours wandering around Hoddeston whilst the box was fitted, it was well worth the journey(s).
Please may I use space on this forum to say that I have had nothing but the greatest of help from  everyone here, and especially serek, who did an excellent job for a very fair price.

General Discussion Area / Help needed......
« on: 22 June 2014, 19:26:17 »
There is a charity/church coffee stall at the Sunday boot sale that I go to, and they are currently fund-raising to help a tragically disabled 5-year-old girl.
Now before you go "oh, groan", please take a minute or two to follow this link:-

PLEASE!

The bravery and determination of this poor young lady are worthy of your consideration.....

P.S. To the mods; if this isn't posted in the right place for maximum exposure, could you place it where it will be, please.

General Discussion Area / Lancaster Bomber
« on: 14 June 2014, 15:09:41 »
After seeing the fly-past overhead today, I got to thinking about that magnificent aircraft, the Lancaster Bomber.
I Googled and was surprised to learn that they built over 7 THOUSAND of them! And now, sadly, there are a mere two airworthy planes left.
I also learned that the other one, presently in Canada, will be flying over to us here in early August, for a unique, never to be repeated celebration/remembrance display.
It wasn't clear where this display is to take place: does anybody know?

Omega Electrical and Audio Help / Is it the starter motor?
« on: 08 June 2014, 17:39:53 »
Usually the first start of the day is perfect, but after a run, then leaving it for an hour or so, restarting has the starter cranking away for several seconds, as if the battery were low/flat, then it usually picks up and starts.
The battery is a few weeks old, so in good condition - checked by leaving headlight on for a long time and minimal drop in terminal voltage. I also thoroughly cleaned the battery terminals and connectors, with the exception of the lead to the starter itself, as I couldn't get near it.
Does this point to a failing starter motor, or does anyone have any other ideas, please?

Ron.

P.S. Are there any mobile mechanics near Witham, Essex, as I have other problems, too!

General Car Chat / Photos?
« on: 02 June 2014, 21:28:02 »
I know I'm being thick, because I've seen photos posted on here so it is possible, but I don't know how to do it!
Can anyone guide a simple soul, please?

General Discussion Area / THE Ukraine?
« on: 01 May 2014, 14:16:43 »
Can anyone explain what is racist about saying "THE Ukraine"? I've just watched a recording of "Have I got news for you", hosted by Jeremy Clarkson, in which he said that the BBC considers that saying THE Ukraine, rather than just Ukraine to be racist and all of the "THEs" were edited out of a particular episode of Top Gear.

General Discussion Area / Any Radio Amateurs on here?
« on: 27 April 2014, 21:58:15 »
After a conversation with Andy, in which I discovered that he, like me, is a licenced Radio Amateur, I wondered if there are any more of us geeks on the forum?

About 2 1/2 years ago I bought a battery from Advanced Battery Supplies (www.advancedbatterysupplies.co.uk/vauxhallomegapetroldieselcarbatteries),  It cost me £45 back then, including delivery. It arrived the next day, with an upgrade to a better type for no extra charge!
Recently it has been losing charge, so I emailed the company to check the warranty and I had an immediate response, asking me to charge it overnight, independently of the vehicle and ring them (freephone)  the following afternoon regarding the outcome.
After charging, I used a 5 amp load to discharge it and the terminal voltage dropped to 10 volts within 2 minutes and sustained that voltage for a couple of hours.
Dead cell, I concluded, so I reported this to the suppliers, and they readily agreed with my diagnosis and are sending me a replacement immediately!
Can you ask for better than that?

Ron.

P.S. The standard warranty is for 4 years - better than Halfrauds?

I received this offer in my email today, and it looks a good deal - unless you know better?

General Car Chat / Is there a better deal?
« on: 18 March 2014, 14:59:15 »
Carpartssaver are currently offering 5 litres of Dexron III ATF for £18.89, inclusive of VAT and delivery (ebay item No. 290994733693).
Ever willing to save my pension pennies, I am wondering if this is the best deal around, or does anyone know of a better one?
I don't have trade Club, nor do I know how to get one or of any dealers locally who operate the scheme, so for me it's basically retail only.

General Car Chat / Autobox level plug.
« on: 12 March 2014, 21:35:36 »
I want to spend the minimum of time under the car (fat, awkward location, etc) so if anyone could tell me what size socket I need to for the level plug, that would save me a little aggro, please?

General Car Chat / Useful aerosol grease.
« on: 10 March 2014, 22:18:41 »
I discovered this very useful lithium-based grease in Poundworld. I've only used it on plumbing fittings so far, but it has been great - just right for an Omega's important little places!
It's called "Easy Grease" by Rapide products, and obviously costs £1.
As an aside, has anyone been watching the programme on Poundworld on telly?
