Front indicators on newer cars
« on: 14 June 2018, 19:31:43 »

Haven,t been on the bike for over a week due to getting over a persistent stomach bug.(Aaah ;D). Anyway, back on today and either my eyes are getting worse or are modern lenses less visible in strong sunlight? Found when crossing over roads from a bike lane, (i always look, that,s how iv,e managed to reach 73 :)) that some of the said indicators are nearly invisible when the sun is straight on the front of the car. Anyone else noticed this?

Fashion / car styling has seen the orange lenses replaced with clear lenses and use lamps (bulbs) painted orange
the paint breaks down ,flakes off showing white light ,harder to see in sunlight .

it is an MOT fail ,but missed by some testers

See your point but some of the cars are 16/17 plate.

Clear lenses on indicators have been on & off (no pun intended  ;D) for years .... My 73 MKIII Cortina had a yellow diffuser behind a clear lense at the front.

Ive noticed this for some time.

I believe the indicators are less easy to see when the manu makes them part of the headlamp cluster.
There easier to see when separate units...

That's why they insist on turning the relevant headlight off when you indicate... I have noticed some cars also dim the tail light as they're too bright for the indicators to show ::)

Where's the slap head smiley when you need it ;D

I guess manufacturers have decided that it's so rare for them to be used, correctly, if at all, that it doesn't matter if you can see them or not. >:(

DRL are a ridiculous idea for a country with daylight...

Supposed to make it safer for moto/bicyclists yet the net result is making them invisible... Which in turn legalises flashing leds on pushbikes which are a distraction, especially when following which causes more accidents... ::)

Life was alot simpler before the elfs got involved.

And anyway . . . .

In West Wales it's so rare for them to be used, correctly, if at all, that it doesn't matter if you can see them or not. >:(

It's because they're not bilingual... It's a wonder there's any space on the roads there with all the writing on them :D

I think LEDs don't help, unless you are at the perfect angle, and assuming the far brighter DRL LEDs haven't already burnt your retina.

Then there are those songs with Audis and a copy of Vagcom, who disable the DRL/sidelight dimming when indicating, because of a opps YOU attitude.

I personally find the previous model VW Golf and Passat impossible to see rear indicator, esp if the brake lights are on.
