And didn't that get cancelled until it came back in its current form?

Exactly  ;)

Top Gear was funny due to the way it was written & presented ..... it wasn't about the presenters' abilities behind the wheel..... that's what the Stig was for

I know my thoughts are opposite to virtually everyone on here, but I am entitled to my say....

Can't stand the bloke, can't stand Hammond even worse. Can't stand the programme. Hate it, hate it.
Just about tolerate James May....

Wow...I feel much better now :y

You are not alone. He is an utter egotist, and I shall be glad to now watch the programme again. ;

I think I've mentioned this on here before .
I met him only once, and that was more than enough .
It was at the old BBC buildings at Shepherds Bush London . I was lending an expensive Thermal Imaging Camera to the Tomorrows World programme team and was being signed through security . Suddenly I was aware of a large bloke invading my space at the attendants desk and without even considering me or what was taking place verbally lambasted the chap who was dealing with me and my escort into the building . I believe he was upset about parking ,or lack of it maybe , but was loud and obnoxious in all of our presence and indeed of many others around the foyer.
The young security officer ,who was clearly embarrassed ,politley replied to " Jezzar" that he would sort out the problem as soon as he had completed my signing in .
Clarkson threw his car keys at the attendant hitting him in the chest and in a slow ,deep but threatening voice said " you'll sort it now......."
Then without an apology or any acknowledgement swiped his access to all areas pass and was through the turnstile and gone .
My overwhelming memory of the whole incident is the smell of stale tobacco that oozed from him.
A thoroughly unpleasant man.

Not to mention some very well chosen guests...

Sure some of the shenanigans were utter shit... that chasing around the army camp or the ambulances as recent examples, but it was always slickly produced.

I guess it will probably end up on Dave with the three of them and hopefully carry on regardless with Andy Willman behind the scenes. Love it or loathe it, it was a well oiled machine, and whilst the Beeb didn't have much choice, they don't have a program without those four key people...

"Ooh yes this new Ford Focus hatch is wonderfully well priced and look at this boot space"..

It'd be like watching paint try and you'd be better off picking up a copy of Auto Express  :-\

I don't know about anyone else but I watched it to see relatively normal looking people (yes, I know in reality they are obscenely well paid) doing ridiculous things in cars I could never hope to afford - things I would love to do and cars I'd love to own. Call it living vicariously because that's what it was..

I guess if you don't wish that one day you could own a Ferrari LaFerrari and rag it around a track then you wouldn't see the appeal maybe?

Oh and if I could have Gillian Anderson (a recent star in a reasonably priced car) on my sofa, that would be great too (she did it for me as a teenager watching the X-Files and she does it for me now, it seems!) ;D
