SSD advice please
« on: 30 July 2018, 18:29:33 »

Thinking of upgrading my Dell Vospro model 3568 laptop with an SSD drive.

Looked at Crucial, any other recommendations please.

256 gig would suffice.

Also need a cable and cloning software.

Other option is if your Lappy has a spare Sata M2 slot, fit a SSD in there and keep your original Harddrive as well.

As for Cloning Software and lead dont bother buying them as a Kit, there about £18 for the Kit. get a cheapo USB3 to Sata off eBay for a couple of quid, and download Free, Reflect or EaseUS cloning / partition tools.

Hold back a few more weeks, SSD prices are expected to tumble further, back to the levels of about 3yrs ago :)

Don't bother cloning, rebuild the rather thing properly.

Crucial are on my shit list at the moment.

Twice now I've had their SSDs fail. Which in itself is annoying. But they don't like to honour their warranty, and try to refund you what they think its worth...  ...which both times was less than £15 :(.  It takes a lot of patience and time to get them to accept the error of their ways.

If Im honest and the little experiance of using SSD's over the last few years, Ive had more SSD's Fail over the recent times than Ive had Hard Drives fails over the last 30 Years  :-\ >:(

While I've only had one SSD die on me, but many more HDDs over the years.

But, that's going to be highly dependent on usage - mine is generally light, while I expect TB pounds on them like a teenager on his first time ;D

Cloned the existing HD to a portable HD.

Going to fit the SSD in the morning and try a clean install of Win 10.

If that fails, I'll re-install the HD, then clone it to the SSD.

Knowning my luck, it won't be that straightforward  :(

If you start it before Breakfast, should almost be ready by Tea Time.  ;D fresh Win10 off the MS Site seems to take forever these days.  ::)

I've got it on a USB stick.

What could possibly go wrong  ::)

By the way, I  settled in the end for an ACME SSD drive, from the Pound Shop.

Not sure how much it cost, as I bought other things as well ::)

I have some consumer grade SSDs in 2 of the Proliants here, and they do take a pounding. Actually, I think the OOF primary database is on those ;D.  No issues with them, bar the sata controller in the server crashing (possibly heat related).

One of those Crucials that failed had had really minimal use TBH in Mrs TB's old lappy, and was just over a year old.  The other was about 2yrs old, and had been used in my own desktop which gets less than average use, but is data intensive on the rare occasions it is used.

I think I was unlucky on both occasions, rather than wearing them out - SMART wasn't showing high wear.  My gripe was with Crucial's attitude.

It'll be a lot cheaper next month, and massively cheaper next year.  Looks like the greedy bastards have created too much manufacturing capacity. Again :D.
