So I bought my BMW based off my car share trips to work. When we first started sharing lifts, my buddy had a 2015 BMW M235i. (2 door) - At the time I still had my 3.2 Elite. His 3.0 petrol was hugely more powerful, frugal and sounded just as great if not better thanks to the exhaust. (stock BMW)

Chalk and cheese type of cars and the age at which they were designed/built. But he would easily crack 30mpg and he drives like TB...

So when I started looking for a replacement thanks to ULEZ, I was drawn to an N55 block 3.0 petrol BMW. From what I see generally very reliable unless you go track with them and tune them up hard.

Pop these engines in Eco mode and it allows the car/engine to coast. This I found has a big effect on fuel use and can really make it drop. It's also very efficient on the motorway, even for a short period. I often join the M25 after leaving work with MPG around ~24-27mpg. Usually like to win the traffic light grand prix drags now  ;D

But just 15 mins and it's low 30's and I'll average 33mpg or so by the time I'm home. That's sitting in the BMW lane as well, not doing 60. These engines much prefer doing 75-95mph.

I could never find a m235i in the spec I wanted, BMW's are a nightmare due to options when looking second hand. So you have to go through all the photos in detail to see what it actually has. I wanted Pro Nav, Parking Senors (front/rear) *yes each was an option  ::), memory mirrors and cruise. But even this basic shopping list was hard to find, always one would be missing.

Stroke of luck and I found my 435i with all the trimming on it plus ones I did not expect. (HUD, Memory Seats, Adaptive Lights)

Not sure this engine and more weight would help in the 5 series, I do notice the performance loss between m235i and my 435i, but his was 325bhp mine is 302bhp. Think the B58's would be a better choice and a stage one remap brings those up I think to nearly 430bhp.

At some point I'm very tempted to Stage1 mine, as it would go from 302bhp to 380bhp!! But I also need some pocket money to upgrade the charge pipe first.

If little fatty can get over the badge, I think this engine (or B58) in something like a 4 series could suit him. I don't find the ride harsh, as this was before the "M" lite type was officially born.

Current car my lift share buddy has is a 2021 m235i, but this is the 4 door one and "only" a 4 pot petrol but still makes 300bhp. We find mine sounds a heck of a lot better and not a massive difference in fuel use.

To sum up, 30mpg on a mixed drive into outskirts of London is no problem. Longer runs, mid 30's very easily even if cruising in outside lane.

They are quite useful apps to be honest. I've also got the proper BMW diags and cables which has proven useful when replacing side vision cameras etc

Changed the battery in MrsT's 2016 Zafira Tourer, was the original GM one. Not bad going I guess. Easy job.

Unlike the BMW, where when I come to do that, apparently I need to code it/link it with Bimmerlink/bimmercode. Luckily it had a new one fitted at purchase, so should be good for a few years.

You do indeed, but it's simple enough with any diag tool, the Battery Management System needs to know so it manages the charging / discharging profile of the new battery.

Yeah looks easy enough, not yet invested in BimmerLink/Code, a friend has one. Which allowed me to open the exhaust flap and pull the fuse

Hi Tunnie, long time no see!

How's the 435i? My old boss had one - nice bit of kit I thought and I still miss my 335d  :y

I love it, has some decent performance. Silky smooth straight 6, loads of gadgets. Feels well screwed together done 7k since I bought it last year. Really enjoy driving it which is the main thing, love being back in RWD. Just makes the drive much more enjoyable when booting it, much more fun the rears loosing traction than the fronts spinning up!

It must be a worry for the car manufacturers that have put all of their eggs in one basket as the lack of uptake of EV’s could finish them off.  High insurance premiums, range anxiety or simply lack of charging availability (not everyone can charge at home) has a negative impact on the sales, and that’s before anyone mentions the fire risk. The Merc in the link, judging by the charging figures I’d have to stop and wait for it to charge at least twice just one way on the Cornwall run, and unless it was a rapid charger I could be sat there for hours on end, whereas my current car will get me there, get me back home and get me more than half way back to Cornwall on one tank. Admittedly I don’t drive to Cornwall every week but EV’s just aren’t for me. I have zero interest in them, and neither do many others, hence the car manufacturers big dilemma. If the public show no interest in EV’s and EV’s are there only source of income, then that company will die.

Yes true, they are not for all. But my wife's school is ~3 miles each way and many short runs per day. Weekend swimming with kids etc, same thing, 3 miles or so each way.

I can charge at home and charge for free at work. So quite temping here.

But even EV Salary Sacrifice schemes still don't make it viable. But some of these massive depreciation hits are temping. Will keep an eye on these EQC's as if they come down much more they could be come a viable option for the wife.

There is one roundabout that is off-camber and even when I'm listening to an audio book and in no rush I've accidentally had it sideways. Because it hides the speed so well compared to the daddy bus, very little body roll and I've caught myself out why its sliding and I'm not even in that much of a hurry!

Remember, they will be PS4S now, check with other owners if its PS4 or PS4S they are running...   ...although I think PS5 are just around the corner, although they will be an unknown until a few people try them.

Double check the PS4 wasn't runflat.  Everywhere I found who claimed to have PS4, they were either PS4S or PS4 ZP, including the MK and Cov branches of Costco.  Of course, that could be in the size I was looking for.

But any PS4 thats not runflat will likely be old stock, so worth checking dates, as you want to have them off within 5 years of the date stamp.

Look like normal PS4's  ???

In many ways I miss my old Daddy bus, it was a capable car. Comfortable, did a road trip to Ireland in it. Drove about 2k over a couple weeks, I remember climbing back into the 3.2 and thinking I prefered the daddy bus  :o

I think its a little small for me, maybe I should try.  But I personally find 5 series causes me issues on longer runs, can't see the smaller ones being any better as they tend to be too taughtly sprung, even in comfort modes for those that have that function.

Clearly large petrols NFG to me, I can't achieve those sorts of MPG figures ;D.  But the diesels are every bit as quick in reality, if dull, and I couldn't care less about ULEZ :)

You can see on the long run, I was not hanging about. Soon as it opened up, so did my right foot.

Suspect it's not for you, it's quite low. You fall into it a bit, quite a difference to the daddy bus. I find the ride firm but good, but I do have a generally good road surface. As it's M3/M25/Great West Road for me on my commute.

Interested to see how normal tyres change it.

I do feel like it's about as close as to your old MV6 as you can get. Interior has worn well, feels like new, dark leather with M-Sport seats also sealed it for me. Those leg extending supports make it very comfortable for me.

I've had the entire family of 3kids + the wife in there and it's been fine. So not sure why you would struggle for size!

That said behind me there little leg room.
Well, next time you're up in Brakkers.... ;)

Not sure I want 6 months of life taken out of my tyres in 15 mins. But yes, next time I'm up  :y

Currently running on Continental Sport Contact 5’s all around, they had 6mm on when I bought it. Down or 4.5mm in 12 months / 7k miles, so thinking a summer deal at Costco is needed. Almost getting TB style miles. Then again this is a bit of an animal.
To put into context, I got 3k from a set of SC5's and 5k from the rears.  Unusual in itself that the rears outlived the fronts - mostly because I was too scared to use the loud pedal ;D

PS4 are available in runflat, I think Michelin refer to them as ZP (Zero Pressure).  Only PS4S available in non runflat nowadays, and quite a different tyre to be honest.  Personally I prefer the original PS4, but then I drive, to quote DLK, like a cock. Well, before I became a reformed character, just like that Mr Slow YZ250....
