Title: Panasonic plasma main board question
Post by: cam.in.head on 07 January 2019, 16:17:24
Hi. One of my recent hobbies is with plasma tv,s  mainly panasonic.
One question regarding the reset issue on some models. In this instance the TX-P50U30B.( beleive also the S20/21range too)
Ive had two  or 3 now with the clicking/ non turn on issue ,reset with the remote power button and set power button.all ok for a few weeks with no issues.then can happen again out of the blue.
Replacing the main board solves the issue .
So my question is .....what is the offending part on the main board that causes this?. I beleive the Samsung r86,87 range had similar issues caused by the eeprom ?
Sorry to you proper tv engineers. Still learning all this

Plasma eh? Is it worth maintaining such old hardware? Surely they are all very old now  :-\

Price of new hardware board could get new TV?

capacitor kits are available (common issue on the power supply)
worth checking any relays on the board(as you have spare boards to tinker with)
i use the 46" model on my cctv system
they do use a sh*t load of electric compared to modern tv sets though  ;)
and weigh more than a modern 5 door hatchback  ;D ;D

as long as it is not your main TV tat is on 5+ hours a day ,every day
because power consumption  ;D which would add up over a year  ;)
great TVs though  :)
very happy with the use/quality i've had out of my 46" panel heater Panasonic  ;D

No my main tv is still a 36” panasonic crt. Great tv with good sound quality.so no worries there. The plasmas are my hobby and I’m trying to understand more how they work. The freezing up issue with the main board is a common one and repaired by swapping the board.so it follows that there is a part or more that is causing the issue.
On some LG TVs you can bake the boards in the oven to reflow the chips and it works most of the time but can’t do it on this because there are a lot of smd components on the back .
I realise this is a car enthusiasts forum but I beleive there are some tv engineers on here.just hoping for some info. Maybee i should join an av forum realy !
Thanks so far anyway.

I remember reading somewhere that certain amounts of contamination remain on the board following the production process. The theory being that careful cleaning will remove this along with any electrolyte that might have leaked from the ageing capacitors.
There`s another whole  debate about which cleaning agents are more effective then others.
It`s just a thought  :)

Isopropyl alcohol seems to pop up in conversations so il get and try some although the board does look clean in mine. Failing that il use the heating / cooling test on various parts to see if it can affect it. Trouble is it’s so random and they can go for ages after a reset so I’m leaning towards it being a software problem rather than physical.
It’s like everything else in life.i want to Understand how things work and repair if possible. It’s not about the money it’s about the enjoyment especially when it’s a hobby.
Just thought someone on here may know the answer .

If the capacitors are on their way out (and they probably are), then resetting the power buttons will work for a while, till they are completely out of tolerance. then it won't switch on at all
check the capacitors for bulging and leaks, though not always evident   :y
plenty of youtube and www info
kit of capacitors probably available on ebay
i think maplins have gone bust now  :-\

Yeah I think they have ,can get stuff easily from rs or digikey thou.
It would be nice to be the caps, much easier than reflowing bga chips or reprogramming software .but I’m not sure yet especially as they are all very small surface mount cans or smd stuff.
If it was a single smd cap supplying a chip that would be great ,.
Will still try the heat/ cooling trick first thou just to see.
Thanks dave
