Title: Mini Moke on Wheeler Dealers.
Post by: Bigron on 18 July 2018, 21:57:04
I've just been watching an old episode of Wheeler Dealers, the one where they "rescued" q Mini Moke.
Apart from tolerating that very annoying mendacious turd, Brewer, it was quite amusin g, with all the carefully scripted ham acting!
My question is, does anyone know the location of the Moke for its (inadviseable) test run in sea water?

Ron.

I suspect pendine sands. But think the beach huts were somewhere else entirely.

Pendine is favoued by a lot of car progs as you can/could legally drive on it. Top Gear did a few vids there. S-Type R Vs 300c Vs Monaro being the one I think I remember.

Land speed record set here in the 1920's at around 180MPH.

Babs.....if memory serves. :)

Yep.....driven by Parry Thomas in 1927 and reached 171.02MPH.

A chain driven beast which apparently 'chopped him in half' when it crashed. Dug up in 1969.

27 litre aero engine, 450 BHP, spoked wheels and chain drive - on sand. What could possibly go wrong? :o

I'm not sure the world has cojones that big any more. ;D

Parry Thomas was well prepared for the 'unexpected' Kevin.

Grainy black and white footage from 1927 shows him suitably attired in a stout overcoat and scarf. Presumably the same attire
if he fancies a crack at the south face of the Eiger later in the day. :)

I can see where he went wrong now; he neglected to have a fag hanging out of his mouth as he drove off on that fateful run. ::)

I believe the law of the time was Woodbine or Capstan full strength fags were required or the run would be considered null and void. :)

Yep. Filters are for girls and anything less stout than a woodbine might fold back on you over about 160 MPH. You could get some ash in your eye. That might be dangerous. ;D

Hope you mean the car and not Parry Thomas. :o

I've got a video cassette showing old GP racing-back when the cars carried riding mechanics-and it shows one of the cars pulling into the pits for fuel. Two blokes wearing brown smock coats and flat caps are in the pits waiting and as the car stops one of them opens the filler cap and puts a funnel in while the other hefts what looks like a milk churn and begins pouring in the fuel both of these blokes have a fag on the go and while he's sat waiting the car driver lights a fag too :o :o Elf and safety at its finest :y ;D ;D

As I mentioned in another thread recently - In 1985 Keke Rosberg did a lap of the old Silverstone circuit, with a slow puncture in a rear tyre, and a track that hadnt completely dried from earlier rain. His speed over the lap as an average of 160.9 mph !
When he got back to the pits, he got out of the car and lit up a ciggy. Then jumped back in the car and did another lap at the same speed, just for fun.
1985 seems like a different planet now.  ::)

Can't remember seeing any footage of it[it's so long ago now]but it is said that Barry Sheene had a hole in the chin bar of his crash helmet so he could have a fag while sat on the grid without having the trouble of taking his helmet off.

It is.

Presumably 1985 was the era of 'turbo F1' with 1000 BHP and more. :y :y

Rumour has it 'Bazza' had a hole cut in the front of his leathers so a  grid girl could straddle him before the flag dropped. ;) :D

Of course, grid girls have now been banned from F1 because the hairy armpit feminist groups don't like pretty girls enjoying themselves. :-\

It was indeed. Up to 1500bhp in qualifying trim.  8)
I think the story about the ciggy aperture in Sheenes helmet is true btw.

Correction: they just don't like pretty girls - you can usually see why!  ;D
