Bloody egay
« on: 21 May 2020, 19:35:22 »

I need a USB (A) to USB-C cable.  Should be nice and cheap on eBay.  But all the 99p listed ones are really £3-6 due to the way to can list shit on there.

Unless they clamp down on these shenanigans, I can see normal people like me simply not bothering.

£1.55 inc Royal Mail 1st Class  :-\
Ta, appreciated :y

Though I have ordered one from elsewhere now. significantly cheaper as well but without free postage.  But I ordered some other bits I've been putting off and got free delivery on the order, so ended well.

Up til recently, I have managed to just scroll through eBay listings and ignore the £0.99 - £100 type listings, but notice the sellers have found a way to get the item to show as just 99p, rather than a range, making it a pain in the arse.

I've given up on ebay USB cables. They often contain so little copper that they can't charge a phone properly, especially one that's flat and needs a high current. The cheap wire results in a voltage drop and the charging stops and starts.

I find the ones CPC sell (with some tech specs) a lot better. I keep a list of the the things I need often like AA batteries and place an order when I exceed the free delivery threshold (which has now gone up to £17.50 + VAT because of COVID-19).

They used to send special offers every week but that has stopped for now but when they did buy 40 AA batteries and 40 AAA batteries from them was excellent value, like £7 a pack.

Brave Man using Cheap eBay USB cables, especially C or Micro type, been there got the Shirt.

I only use good known or branded types now and pay a bit more, works out cheaper in the long run rather than getting the USB Ports repaired or replaced.  ;)

Yep. I'll go with that. Cough up a bit more £. Cheapo cheapo cheapest is just not worth the hassle.

It's a real piss-off when you think the phone is charging, and after some time you find that the connector is a shit fit and that nothing has happened.

oppsing wifi. I oppsing hate oppsing wifi. Yet another long post lost. oppsing wifi. Lets ban it, it only causes interference.

Did I mention I oppsing hate wifi?

Jist of post, USB-C not mainstream, doubt my 79p USB-C cable will ever get used now I've checked it works. There is currently no need for it, unless you're gay/stupid enough to buy an Apple Mac, which in itself is pointless because Apple are lost since Jesus died.

I think that sums up the mega post.

One last thing. Wifi is shit. There was a brief moment before every man and his dog got it and misconfigured it, but now its shit. And I oppsing hate it.

Its also been reported by egay is so slow on all but the fastest PCs (and even causes them to light up their fans) - they are getting a 3rd party to track you via javascript that generates a fingerprint every page load, to bypass the ad tracking blockers people load, which it then uploads to said 3rd party. Its quite CPU intensive.

Because also egay is laced with embedded ads, most of these ads also use either the same (or a competing) scripts, so you can be fingerprinted 10-20 times per page.

Epic work, egay.

I live in an area where everyone has wifi, and because they are thick, set them up like idiots, so they interfere with everyone elses. Then because they get shit wifi, they buy extenders, hindering the situation even more, so they go all in on the mesh wank. Result, nobody can use wifi here.

Things improved briefly, when I swiped 13 Homehubs from work, and set them all on different channels, and had broadcasts constantly going.  But soon returned to normal.

To give you some idea how bad it is on 2.4Ghz here, ping paket loss between laptop and the access point is around 1% during a normal prelockdown day, to around 60% over an hour in the evening, or all the time currently.

Its that bad, I might get some more routers and just blat the 2.4Ghz band, and move to a 4G dongle myself. Though then I cant use network devices.

Obviously, I'd have to turn off those 13 routers when I wanted to fly something, or play with the RC cars.

Guessing its a fairly recent iPad. Though the fact its a mobile OS may help block their shenanigans.

Pretty much what I use, have done for years ever since BT thought it was a good idea to dribble 1 to 4mbs on Broadband around here.

I use a Netgear Nighthawk LTE Gigabit Router not the best but it's a decent LTE Cat16 spec which delivers me 250 to 420mbs down and a reasonable 150 up, all depending on what's happening on the M25 just down the road, the 4G SIM which is actually a 5G UL Plan deliverers my needs and doesn't cost me much because been with them for years now and beats anything that Virgin or BT can currently offer.

Prior to the Nighthawk I was using a Cradlepoint LTE Router with all the bells and whistles untill they decided last year they wanted $200 a year Licence just so I can access my Router, so that went, which was a shame because it was a bullet proof device.

Also go an Huawei 5G LTE Box sitting around somewhere doing nothing just waiting for EE or Voda to give me some 5G Coverage around here.

5GHz has a limited range here (5GHz generally has poor penetration), depending which way the Shermans are pointing their radars at RAF Croughton.  Oddly enough, the usual radar shared frequencies work better, but suffer a 5 minute dropout as per the legal requirements when the AP channel hops.

For me, as the router <> Internet connection is rock solid, and its the device <> router (well, AP in my case) thats failing.  Hence was thinking of a 4G dongle plugged straight into the laptop.  Checked my dongles yesterday, looks like they are all 3G.

5+ years ago I would have said a 3G dongle will work fine but there's not much Bandwidth left on 3G these days most of it has been ReFarmed for 4G+  use.

4G Dongles now are pretty much useless for proper LTE speeds , 4G+ / LTE Plus is all about Carrier Aggregation and Multi Aerial MIMO these days something a Dongle probably won't support unless it's a really good one

So, item that I bought last weekend, estimated to be here this week hasn't turned up yet.  Seller marked as dispatched on Monday.  RM say label has been purchased, but has yet to be scanned anywhere.

Whats the betting that the seller claims it was posted on Monday, but RM are struggling with sniffle issues.  We all know reality, the lazy oppswit CBA to post it, as is becoming so common with back bedroom egayers.

This not just eBay. I often order stuff from Amazon marketplace, delivery in, say, one week. Five minutes later I get an email saying the order has been dispatched, so I can no longer cancel. More like some prick pressing the order dispatched button as soon as it hits his laptop.

As a seller I only leave feedback once i have received it and anything I list clearly states shipping within two working days (when it actually gets posted depends on when in the day they pay for it, but it gives me a clearly defined window to get it posted/collected) and as a buyer I wait until I have actually used/fitted the item.

Have only twice left imperfect feedback. Once was for Eurocraparts or their alterego... Craparts4less? they got the full thieving liar feedback, and the other was some shitty Chinese tat that I spent a tenner on just incase it worked... It didn't so the rating was neutral and the verbal was along the lines of buying a tenners worth of jello was more use than the shite they were selling.

But generally I try to verify before I buy that it is what I am expecting, that way there's never a surprise.

That's the theory anyways...

This was the very first time I've left anything but positive feed back.

..... and I've just upset another eBayer by suggesting the 'high temp brake caliper paint' I bought from him was actually Hammerite Smooth. I think the neutral feedback tipped him over the edge!  ::) ::)

That's what i've always used on standard brake calipers to be honest, always worked well.   :)

Maybe, but I already had a tin of silver Hammerite Smooth .. I've had a couple of tins of caliper paint over the years & there was more to it than Hammerite

Most stuff I order does arrive quickly, even a proportion of Egay/Amazon Marketplace.  But eBay sellers, particularly UK eBay sellers, seem to suffer a lot from CBA, as if its just too much effort to package it up and post it (or they are waiting for the item to arrive themselves).

The seller was probably nervous about posting the item when he printed the label ,noticed it was Brackley, so the item will be lost in transit /  never arrive  :(
and he's going to have a claim to deal with  ;D :D

My 10KG of fish food turned up after an 8 day rest at a DHL facility ,not the sellers fault
at one stage the tracking stated "redirected by recipient "  :o news to me , interestingly the Ebay tracking was doing a better job than the DHL own server/website  was reporting , i'm still waiting for the text off DHL to say the driver is one stop away  ;D

I sent a caravan oven last year, well boxed, bubble wrap and plenty of card round it,

they brought it back as undelivered, its was lozenged, looks like they parked a truck on it, about 5 inch out of square.

when I claimed "they dont cover glass" what about the steel box it was in?

never even refunded the carriage charge,

Herpes get bad reports but never had a problem.

Does it make a difference if its a cheap or expensive item?  Though I agree with STEMO - anyone ordering anything of eBay thats more expensive than you are happy to lose get what they deserve.

Credit where it is due, set of cheap brake discs* ordered Thursday morning, arrived Friday afternoon.

Although the alternator parts took longer than estimated to arrive, that took a week.

Though far more impressive is an online order from Wheelspin Models. Ordered yesterday morning (Sat), just had notification it will be delivered by lunchtime today (Sun).  Shame I won't be able to play with my new toy, as I'll be waiting for eBay to deliver a battery adapter.

* should point out, I do not recommend cheap discs.  This is for the rear of TBE, just to have on the shelf in case:

a) it gets presented for an MOT next month (as of yet, TBE's MOT has not been extended :()
b) fails on the state of the rear discs, they are a bit messy.

Your MOT certificate will not be extended if your vehicle’s MOT expires on or after 1 August 2020  ;)

rear, or front disks for that matter should only fail an MOT if damaged, weakened, brake test fail due to efficiency or bad imbalance.
rusty and scored disks should get an advisory
that said ,brakes are a pretty important part of driving and you should aim above the minimum requirements to pass an MOT IMHO
and if the brakes have been maintained ,swapping disks and pads is simple
rear brakes poorly maintained can become a nightmare due to the inner handbrake gubbins  though

Where a calliper went sticky 2 or 3 years back, one face got badly scoured, which makes it look rusty and crap, as the new pads aren't touching those areas.  Always easily passes brake test/balance, although clearly that single pad can't have the efficiency it should.  Its had advisos for last 2 years ;D

Looks even worse now its spent the last 4 months barely used ;D

So I thought I'd get a set of cheapies, "just in case".  I wouldn't be upset if he did fail them, irrespective of the technicalities of if it is a fail or not.  I've owned the car since 55k, and I suspect they are the originals, at 155k

well with the mileage, they are probably on the thin side anyway
if you have new discs you could fit them BEFORE the MOT and avoid the advisories  ;D
an MOT with no advisories would help with the sale IF IF IF you find a car worthy of replacing TBE
(which you won't)  ;D   :-X

Yeah, but not sure I'll present it for MOT, as once she's burnt through this tank of LPG, thats likely to be it.

But we are trouble having to find an acceptable replacement. That said, we probably don't need 3 cars currently either.

Given that its rare we go out separately, especially currently, we probably could drop to one car.  Although she finds the Jag a bit difficult in tight spaces, or fitting it in the small parking spaces at her work.

sounds like MOTing the Omega would be wise then
yes fuel is expensive , but if you are both comfortable driving it then right off the fuel cost as opposed to writing off  shed loads of ££ in depreciation on a car that's a compromise
you've got the zafira as back up and abuse

When she goes back to the office, the Omega is not viable, due to fuel costs. Made doubly worse by its looking like she won't be lift sharing for at least another year. So her fuel costs are approximately quadrupling.

An Ebay battery adapter (XT60), ordered Sunday, arrived today, which meant said toy from Wheelspin Models could have a run...

(Warning, 285Mb, in Apple QuickTime .mov format)

The correct (XT90) adapters, ordered on Saturday from Ebay, haven't turned up yet, though were "posted" within a hour of me buying them.

Some bits ordered Thursday morning arrive Friday morning.  Thats impressively good for ebay.  Alas, some "Fast and Free" bits ordered last weekend are still to arrive.

Also, some copper rod ordered from egay, with part location in "Leicester" a couple of weeks back arrived Thursday. With a customs label on. Lying oppsers.

Like a silly tart, I had velcro'd an action camera to the roof, for footage from the car.  That did survive some of the accidents quite so well :(.  Bit gutted on that, as its my favourite little action cam, the same I used to get the footage from the Brackley meet. Its a bit old now, and I'm struggling to find a new camera module for it (I think I've trashed the lens)

Went to Mercedes twice last week for some bits... Too busy on Friday, so left a list and went back om Saturday... And purchased the one thing they had. Crossed another item off the list and ordered a used one off eBay.

That arrived yesterday. Ordered a couple more bits from Pelican Parts in California (USA, not Norfolk  ;D)... 4  day wait as one of the parts is dealer special order, so from Germany... (go figure, but still less than buying either direct here or evia ebay partly due to the exchange rate and partly because the Lithuanian NOS suppliers are greedy :-X) Shipped yesterday... I reckon that they will arrive before I hear back from Mercedes  ::)
