Title: Space station
Post by: BazaJT on 14 October 2018, 07:59:54
It seems plans are afoot for the UK to have its own space station.Favoured location is in the north of Scotland and could see us launching small satellites-we are world leaders in the development and construction of these-as early as 2020.The location is favoured for its access to the polar orbits that are the principal aim for these satellites. It is reported that such a facility could bring in trillions to the economy.

Sounds like a good earner; as lomg as the scotch don't try to claim the revenue from it as they did with the North Sea oil that we, the English, discovered and drilled for!

There is rumour that Slim Phil might fiddle with tax relief on pensions to pay for the extra £20billion that the NHS has been promised. Wonder where the money for a space station would come from. Where did you get this information from, Baza?

Best place for Slim is tied to one of them on launch in my opinion :y

It was on the news this morning Stemo.Lockheed-Martin were named as the company wanting to build/run the project, while it was a scientist who talked about the polar orbits.A local crofter expressed the opinion that it could/would be a good thing if it led to jobs and apprenticeships for the local youngsters.

Local Scottish crofters building a space station. Nothing like a bit of ambition.  ;D

As long as they don't let that fella who shears his sheepdog near it. F**k knows what we'd end up with.

"Crofter who was supposed to be building space station makes motorbike by mistake. Should have gone to Specsavers". ;D

Possibly, believe there's a base down west that could safely handle the shuttle if the need arose :-\

We wont see none of it, Scotland will be a separate Country and a new EU Member if and when the money starts following in.

Yes it's probably going to Scotland to try and convince the Scots to vote no to independence (again) if and when IndyRef2 happens.  ::)

It'll end up being a huge golden handshake and as Zirk points out all the money will end up in Brussels as part of Scotland's net contribution* to the EU coffers!  :-X

Meanwhile England will build a proper one in Kernow!  :D

* According to the SNP Scotland is the 11th wealthiest country in the world.  ::)

There's only RNAS Culdrose and RAF St Mawgan that could do that

Ans I doubt that Culdrose is long enough so Newquay/St mawgan then

Culdrose is barely long enough to land a helicopter ;D. For their annual air show, the bigger/faster stuff used to operate out of Yeovilton. The based Hawks also can heave trouble getting back in with bad weather and winds from the wrong direction.

It is St Mawgan - I think the runway has been slightly shortened since the RAF left and handed it over to the council, but it's still 9000'. Virgin Galactic/ Virgin Orbit want to base a 747 there and launch satellites using rockets carried under the wings from 40000+ feet.

Culdrose has two runways at around 3500 feet and one of 6000 so yes some way short of Newquay

Sounds like it will save a fortune on launch costs. Just kick it off an Inverness cliff it will topple over the edge of the disc that forms the northern side of earth and be in space. ::) ::) ::)
