Can anybody tell me what the rubber gromit in the pollen filter compartment drain looks like, only my one after cleaning out the crap does not look like the one on the nearside...It looks like it is solid to me  
Or do I have to pierce the rubber ..

Is there any photos of it anywhere on the site...just so I can see what it looks like..

Cheers Mate , I did have a look at that this morning, and have tried the wire,  but there does not seem to be a way through the rubber that stretches across the gromit.. I think I'll pock a long screw driver through it and see how it goes..anyway thanks for the help..

When mind had this fault i put my hand under and pulled the gromet right out and then cleaned it try that mate cause it is an odd shape and you will need to clean it out it is abit of a pain to get back in but i would'ent poke a driver thought it mate but its up to you make sure you move your head as you pull it out cause i got a face full of dirty crap water.

Just read that his came out in the chassie leg mine was under the car have a look under and see if yours is there mate like i said it is a weird shape if you press it you can feel the crap in it if you pop your finger in and clean some of the crap out it may just let the water out and then try and flush the it though.

I wrote the guide for this procedure.  On my car, which is also a 1998, the length of wire simply "poked through" the gromet.  It was not solid in any way and I flushed clean water through whilst agitating the wire back and forth through the gromet.  This approach worked for me.

It may be that your car is an early '98 and so the drain exits at the wheel arch rather than onto the chassis leg like my car.  From your description, I would say that you are in the right place and your exit is in the wheelarch.

If you pour a small amount of water into the drain area, does it drain away?

I also used the method with a piece of electrical cable - worked fine although the access is awful.

I'd be surprised if you could manipulate a screwdriver down there to push through - the difficulty is that the drain goes off at an angle (forwards I think) rather than just straight down through the bottom of the recess.

Also I would try to pull most of the crap out first rather than trying to flush it through as once it fills up with water its even more difficult to find the drain point.   Once the drain is clear you can give it a wash through.
and worth doing regularly to keep it clear.

I agree with the above,  but would state that in my guide I recommend that debris is either manually removed or vacuumed out    I assumed that the visual debris was already removed and pouring a small amount of water would check the functioning of the gromet.

Follow all the advice here and your drain will soon be clear.

Indeed your guide was spot on.   The idea with the cable was perfect as you can bend it to shape.

I was mainly aiming my last comment at the suggestions elsewhere that you can just stick a hose pipe or pressure washer wand in there and blow it out   Doesn't work if there is any amount of crap in there..

Just a thought here. You are looking at the scuttle drain and haven't taken out the pollen filter have you?

My car is a facelift, so slightly different layout I guess, but I don't have to take out the pollen filter. The grommet in question is about 25mm diameter and has a very big hole through it which has some rubber flaps in it, if fact, it's more like an open ended 'top hat' than a grommet in the true sense of the word.

As I said, just a thought really.

IIRC when I did mine it seemed to open immediately above the chassis member and the clearance was so small that the gunge had backed up into the pollen filter chamber and poking with wires and screwdrivers didn't dislodge it at first, and indeed made it feel as if there was no hole there. It eventually cleared slowly, however, and it then became clear that there was a bend forwards to be negotiated.
TBH, I didn't bother replacing the grommet once it came out (from underneath).

I removed the pollen filter cleared all the muck out with her vacuum cleaner then poured a jug of water in there and it just disappeared and yes  x25xe the water did come out in the engine bay..never tried the screw driver there was no need to..well happy....just need advice on how to clean out lovey ones Hoover now .

Excellent, I am glad that you have a result as far as the car is concerned anyway.  Not sure what to do about the Vacuum though!
