General Car Chat / small car hunt , continuing saga
« on: 19 January 2012, 16:17:27 »
well.....

finding a small automatic car is provfing harder than i expected,  upped the budget to around £1200  ,  and still struggling.....

however, been looking at a 52 plate 1.6 club astra auto.....   should be able to grab it for £1150,   56k miles,  with 5 months tax and 11 months ticket....

what to look out for???

it's not the perfect solution,   but it's getting to the point where i need to purchase ANY damn car as long as it works....     but the tight fisted idiot in me is still trying to get the best damn deal for our money,...

(surprisingly,  the astra is £200 a year cheaper to insure than a 1.4 polo.  )

General Car Chat / members spotted out and about today.
« on: 15 January 2012, 19:00:15 »
1 2.2 FL omega saloon on the M25 heading north from the M40 towards watford.

1 2.6 W reg FL estate coming off the littlemore roundabout on the southern ring road around oxford....

both with OOF stickers....

Hi guys, whoever you are.....

64
title says it all really....

65
I have spotted a 2002 Corsa , accident repaired,  for a very attractive price,  as a PX to clear....

i've asked, by email,  but other than stating that it's been repaired, and has just sailed through an MOT,  (i don't trust that either, as i have no idea of the independence or quality of the MOT tester, we all know SOME dealers own testers will pass almost anything.....  )     the dealer has claimed no detailed knowledge of the repair  category,   or specifics,

now, that lot sets alarm bells ringing.....  and my first instinct is to avoid like the plague (and such instincts are usually right)

i'm loosely aware some of you guys have the facility to look stuff up that isn;t necessarily otherwise easy to find.....  and i'm cheekily wondering if someone could check this out for me?

if anyone is able to help, I'll PM them the reg no...

while on the subject,  i've expanded the budget a bit up to a nominal figure around  £1250 for the car.....  assuming i can get insurance under £1500

so if you know of an alternative small engine , cheap assed auto for sale.....   let me know....

thanks chaps....

66
would you eagle eyed chaps mind awfully seeing if you can spot anything in your magical wardrobes full of bargain motors???

budget about £400-600

ideal answer,  around about a 99/00 1.2 automatic Corsa....  or equivalent...

MUST be an automatic ,  she stupidly passed her test on an auto basis,  so only allowed an auto.....

she's 18 and therefore insurance is a killer.... so 1.0-1.4 engine,

prefer petrol for all sorts of reasons,  not least to be sure she doesn't get confused and stick diesel in my miggy one day....

thanks in advance for your help chaps....

Cash sale.....

(i didn't think it was appropriate to put this in the sale/wanted section, as i'm rather expecting people just to point me in the right direction.....   not necessarily have one for sale themselves...  )

any advice welcome.......    i've not looked at anythign with less than 6 cylinders for a long time.....    (one of our other daughters had a 106 pug that i'm keen not to ever be reminded of.....  )

rather than mess up Dave's other thread about speakers any further.

so...    my understanding of our current knowledge.

buried in the bowels of the unit , seems to be an IC package responsible for gain/tone control, and input selection,  spitting out a signal to amplifiers...

however, to make matters more complicated, i understand it seems to do some sort of operational check to be sure there's actually operation of playback hardware being involved.

(specifically on the Multi CD cart input...)

this being the case, it would seem to me to be the obvious answer ,

1) to determine what logic signal is being fed by the cd cart operation, and replicate it,
2) determine the input level being fed to it from the audio source , and build a simple buffer/attenuator circuit to take a line level input and adjust it to suit the required input.
3) cut the circuit traces feeding the IC the audio signal AND logic signal , and connect either side of those  to a switch activated  relay, with sufficient switched poles to accomodate all the signal feeds,  (rather than running the audio all the way out to a switch, and back again, risking noise induction)
4) fit a line level input socket, with a socket switched earth/shield contact to activate the relay ...

so, when you plug the ipod in using a mini jack stereo lead, the relay flips automatically, and the logic signal and audio signal are switched from the multi CD feed  , to the feed form our dummy signal and iPod .

you could alternatively put a manual switch on so you can select between CD cart and iPod,  but that means finding somewhere to mount such a thing  without looking crap ...

you could , if you wanted to risk additional noise,  leave out the relay and do it all by feeding out to the switch and back on all circuits, but i personally wouldn't.

so...  who has a unit kicking around in the garage to play with?  working CD cart is probably required...

Omega Electrical and Audio Help / thinking about speakers.......
« on: 17 December 2011, 18:49:21 »
can anyone point me at an exhaustive set of specs for both the existing bose, and non bose omega speakers.....     I have trade contacts at several driver manufacturers...   just idly wondering if i might be able to come up with a more modern,  less budget driven design choice that would work better....   with appropriate response ranges and impedances....

(a mate is head of tech research for the worlds foremost supplier of driver components,  and i consult for several high end speaker manufacturers......   got to be worth a punt eh? )

General Car Chat / bloody puncture
« on: 16 December 2011, 13:29:30 »
so a matter of a few  weeks after new tyres all round, and the offside rear picks up a nail just by the inner sidewall edge....    BUGGER

not repairable, so a new one ordered.....

will have to wait till tuesday to get it fitted....

and it appears my car has no jack....  ,  thankfully i have a trolley jack ,  but discovering i could not fit the spare at the side of the road was a little bloody annoying....

to add insult to injury, it means buying another of these Neutons,  which, are frankly, not very good.....     or it means buying an entire new rear pair....    at Xmas,   not bloody likely.....

General Discussion Area / tesco security strike again.....
« on: 09 December 2011, 01:33:43 »
just read this from a colleague of mine.....

Quote
I went in with my hood up thinking nowt of it as its bloody cold.

I get screamed at across the shop everyone looks, by the security manager who is not even SIA licensed ''take your hood down''

I sighed and choose to have selective hearing thinking F OFF with my Lee Evans voice.
Apon paying for my goods after observing many Burka wearing people on the way to the tills I was pounced on!

The very large security manager tried to grab all my shopping and stop me buying my goods!
He said'' you are lucky you have paid or I would have refused to allow you to shop here''
''I told you to take your hood off''

I paused and smiled and said very loudly ''f me mate I know your a big boy but you'll find no doughnuts in there its all semi skimmed'' ''I am a 39 year old man and you think its acceptable to dictate to me what I can or cannot wear and insult my self identity because IM a white man wearing a hood''
I said ''you are being prejudice towards me''
He said'' its for our customers security''
I laughed and said''so a white man wearing a hoodie is a threat to your customers security with my face clearly visable but someone wearing a Burka dont fit into Tesco's stereotype?''
He said ''I am now going to escort you out of the shop wearing a Burka is religious''

I said ''you are being pathetic mate if you touch me I will defend myself you are clearly ignorant of your claims the Burka has nowt to do with religion and I bought the hoodie here''

I said '' the only threat to security is your lack of respect pal you could have spoken to me nicely and quietly and requested I took my hood off to make you feel better and I would have said no''
''YOUR BARRED''
Yeah F you I'll shop in Asda instead.
Hmmm dont I feel like a proper goon excuse the rant.

i can't quite believe it, but i know the guy.....    he says it happened,  then it damn well happened.

General Discussion Area / apple bashing moment,.... iCloud
« on: 24 November 2011, 11:37:16 »

well, Apple, it looks like you're about to wave goodbye to a lot of users....

such is the removal of service functionality, and system support, that users in their droves are looking likely to be choosing to leave Apple.... replacing their iPhones with Androids, and Macs with PC's

since iCloud REQUIRES, Lion.... anyone either not wanting to run Lion, or unable to run Lion, is having the previous functionality taken away from them on their macs...

making decent multi function sync between iOS device and an older Mac impossible by cloud, moving back to the days of having to manually sync devices

and even those that are running , or going to be running Lion, are facing a hugely reduced feature set......

at which point much of the convenience and integrated feature set that made choosing Mac+ iOS a bit of a no brainer is gone..... and in a rolling systems replacement program, one may as well save the money and get a PC and Android devices.... and use google.... it actually works better......

i note that i have now got several high profile corporate client cases where this is actively on the table for the tech planners, and i can find no reason to argue against it....

this is not 1's or even 10's but 100's of users , being corporately removed from the apple user base, and taking their business elsewhere.....

extrapolating that globally, i'd suggest this change is potentially going to cost apple 10's of thousands of corporate customers.

rather stupid Apple....

i'm aware that there are other members hereabouts with tech jobs ,  i'm wondering what points of view they may have on the subject.....

Looking to acquire a stand in drummer for a free gig this saturday for some friends who are leaving their Pub.....

no money , no budget, but lots of Kudos and i will owe people a MASSIVE favour.... (given my skill set and facilities, that's not an empty gesture... )

and there's free beer and food for the band..... but no budget.....

the ladies are leaving their pub after having spent a couple of years working 7 days a week , with no pay, and putting their savings in to it to bring it back from being a total [ ****** ]-hole to being a nice country village pub.... but after being shafted by the brewery on the refurb costs.... they're 25 grand out of pocket..... I've been close friends with one of them for 30 years.... and would like to give them a bit of a lift at their leaving do......

a most excellent set of friends are willing to do this, giving their time for free, and already play together as an existing band.... it's just the drummer that's missing.... as it's very short notice, and he had an existing commitment.... (i say just, but lets face it, that's quite an important thing...... drummers being rather more critical to these things than other musicians like to admit)

sadly, I'm not cash rich at present.... having been spending far too much on upgrades, maintenance and repair on studios, vehicles, and house, of late...... or i'd put my hand in my own pocket and hire at full rate....

I need to find someone to commit to this by tonight, or we're going to have to call it off.... (so the guys can commit to other things.... ) basically, everyone in my little black book is either working, or doesn't know enough (read... ANY... ) of the material to make any kind of serious stab at it , and no one wants to look a complete nonce....

it's not like anyone needs to know ALL the material..... just say a dozen of the POSSIBLE tracks ...... well enough to get away with it....

and we can maybe jam a bit as well....

i may even be allowed to join in.....

if i can find a decent stand in, willing and able to make this work,.... then we have a fun night out .....

the rest of the (extremely generous and rather good) band have an existing set list that includes the following....

all we need is someone who knows a dozen or more of these tracks.....

(same question is being fired off on other sites , but it is VERY short notice, and most of the pro's i know are already working.....   and those few that aren't don;t know enough of the material as they tend to be "specialist niche market" types...    rather than pub rock and blues types...

Omega Electrical and Audio Help / Pairing/depairing question
« on: 03 November 2011, 11:06:53 »
before i go and do something stupid....

would i be right in surmising that my GID needs to be still in situ to be de-paired....     so,  basically, it has to be de-paired, then physically removed, then the CID fitted, then that be paired up (yes the CID is in delivery mode)

was contemplating trying to fit the CID tomorrow afternoon ,  just coz i'm impatient....
