General Car Chat / mystery problem
« on: 05 August 2023, 18:32:29 »
   Goog afternoon folks,

It has been a long time since my last visit, due to having to give up my precious Omega as I have the dreaded Macular Degeneration.

However, my son has asked me a question which has stumped me and I said I knew where to get the answer!

2005 vauxhall  astra parked on drive for 4 weeks.
Attempt to start failed as battery appears totally dead, nothing whatsoever.
battery charger says battery is charged, no glimmer of life.
connects car to another by jump leads, still no life whatsoever, just as if there was no battert at all.

Any tips on what we are missing(apart from brain cells)

Thank you

paul

General Car Chat / Renault Scenic Intermittent Starting Problem
« on: 16 June 2019, 14:06:32 »
Greetings all,

I have a Renault Scenic 2005 1.6 16V.  Automatic Petrol.  Yes, I know...

Anyway after a very long trip to France we started having problems whereby the car would turn over and not start.  Thinking it might be the alternator I took it into local mechanics who checked alt & battery and found no problems.  On doing a diagnostic they got 'an error message about the starter motor' which they found weird considering it has started perfectly for both me and them that morning several times.

Then they couldn't start it so they plugged it in again and got 'a couple more messages about the timing belt or the cam belt' and said I would need to take it to a main dealer.  Which for obvious reasons I would rather avoid doing...

So in summary the car will always start when cold.  Then say half an hour later after a drop off it will start again and then it will start again a few mins later.  However on about the 4th or 5th try it won't start and you have to wait for it to get 'cold' again before it will start.

Other symptoms are
-The dashboard lights are now dimming when we manually turn the lights on.
-When idling the 'range' mileage (ie what's left in the tank) display shows the mileage gradually dropping and then it will climb again once we start driving again
-The lights don't always come on by themselves any more when they always used to (in tunnels, etc)

When the starting issue happens the car turns over and sort of judders and bumps but won't start.  There are no error messages on the dash, either.

So if we can rule out the battery, alternator and possibly the starter motor, we can also rule out the cam belt (I should hope) as this was only re-done less than 2 yrs (10k miles) ago.

Browsing on google I have seen some suggestions saying it might be a faulty sensor etc, and I have no idea about the timing belt? So does anyone have an inkling as to what might be the problem?

Sorry for the long post and TIA for any help!

My beloved car has been diagnosed as requiring a head gasket, as a result of the HBV giving up and loosing all its water .
It has only done 96000 miles and has been running really well . Its mot runs till august and the reg no is dv03llu so you can check out the history.

The oil leak on the last advisory has been fixed.

It is not silver but grey, cant remember what its  called just now.

Its in generally good nick bodywise,  not full of rust and has a good set of tyres and newish battery.

Cambelt was done about 3 years ago or about 18000 miles.

I will attempt to put some pictures up shortly if I can manage it

If no one is interestd it will be scrapped,  but its really too good for that and so its a project opportunity first

General Discussion Area / MASS/MATHS Question for geeks?
« on: 20 January 2018, 15:39:35 »
Can any of you guys answer this?

A cylinder or disc (say the rough shape of a small roll of cellotape) has a diameter of 500mm.
It is 51mm long and it has a bore of 203mm.

The question is,  if the diameter of 500mm was reduced by 18mm,  what percentage of mass would be lost?

I have tried twice and been wrong both times, and cant think what I am missing (apart from numerous brain cells)

Omega General Help / exhaust MOT failure ?
« on: 10 August 2017, 13:14:29 »
As expected my 2003 2.2 petrol estate has just failed its MOT on exhaust.

Major leaks on central and rear back boxes.

They quoted £416 for the work, I have taken the car away and just wondered what my best options are now, bearing in mind its not something I can do myself, is it worth just doing the two boxes or is it best to replace whole thing?
All advice gratefully received thank you.

ps. Dr Gollum where are you?

General Discussion Area / Grandmas eh!
« on: 15 May 2017, 15:20:38 »

Poor old girl was in the news today,

An 83-year-old grandmother worried her family and was alerted to police after she mistakenly drove for 300 miles to Scotland instead of six miles to her local hospital appointment.
Valerie Johnson was driving to Peopleton’s Royal Hospital in Worcester, just six miles from her home, when roadworks diverted her and she drove for eight hours.
She ended up in Larkhall, Scotland, when she ran out of fuel.
By that point her daughter, 49-year-old Karen Maskell, had called police, worried by her mother’s absence, and had to get a flight to Scotland to pick her up.
Ms Johnson had missed a turn-off near Worcester and had continued north on the M5 and M6 until she had crossed the border.
Her family reported her as missing on 5 May.
The Scottish Daily Record reported that a couple looked after her while they waited for her daughter.
"Mum's next-door neighbour called me to say she hadn't come back and he was worried. I thought she must have had an accident," said Ms Maskell.
"We called the police and by the time I got to her house, they said they had spotted her car on a traffic camera at Preston at 11pm.
"I said it couldn't be my mum because she hates driving, she doesn't usually drive more than three miles.
"But it was her and she was still heading north and we had to get the Scottish police involved."
Police in Larkhall said the couple who looked after Ms Johnson had noticed that her car had stopped in the middle of the road outside their house.
She told them she was lost, so they phoned the police who coordinated with West Mercia Police to inform Ms Johnson's family.
An ambulance was called to check she did not need any medical attention.
"The local couple very kindly looked after the woman, ensuring that she was comfortable until her relatives arrived from England to collect her," said Sergeant John McLeish.

Swimbo managed to scrape the front bumper of her white Toyota starlet on the garden wall leaving various gouges thereon.  (grrrrrr)
Is the stuff from Halfords (paint, filler, clearcoat, wet&dry paper, primer etc) satisfactory, or are other products recommended.?
Any advice or tips very welcome.

General Discussion Area / sticky jerky cursor
« on: 21 April 2017, 21:23:41 »
What is the cause of a cursor being jerky in its movements?

I use a mouse, but it happens when I use the laptop pad as well.

Since it does not happen on all websites I assume its a website problem and not my laptop.

Is there any cure, any settings I can change or anything?

(works fine on here as it happens!)

This simple right click copy and then right click paste facility That I had on Windows XP appears to be non existent on Windows Edge.
I cannot get the thing to copy and paste, does anyone have any idea how I can do this?

Omega General Help / who the devil sells distilled water ?
« on: 10 April 2017, 20:58:13 »
Ok, Tesco,Halfords, boots, eurocarparts, cpa, homebase, asda etc etc all claim to sell it, but on closer scrutiny it turns out that what they actually sell is de-ionized water!

Has anyone bought any recently and if so where from as I am running out of options.

Thanks
