Sorry I can,t offer any help as I am down here in KENT..with the sun shinning!just by by-passing the heater will have no detremental effect and will just cause the water to flow round the system without the heater...as my car had 225k on clock and the oil cooler had also failed it was not an option for me to get it replaced even though I would have appreciated the heat.anyway car did go for another 3+k miles before I sent her to her grave..I have been advised that the replacement is more time consumming but also a bit fiddly...sounds like you have got several kind offers of assistance so I wish you well if you do replace it..by using the copper pipe you don,t damage the ends of the flow/return pipes..but as it is quite a tight fit you do need some vaseline(sir)..it is necessary to form a ring at the bulge end of each pipe with a cable tie as you will not be able to tighten it up with a jubilee clip then just pass several cable ties through each ring on each pipe and pull them tight..just to stop the ippes slidding off the copper pipe..it took me about 20 minutes and cost less than a £...so really cheap quick fix...but it is no substitute for a heater..good luck and keep me posted with results...cannot supply pictures as dont have car anymore...andrew
