Series 1 XJ12, upgraded with full management and a later four speed auto, as a daily
Caterham 160 for a laugh
Range Rover LSE for when a people carrier is required
Electric Citigo for running around town
large estate for carrying stuff around, Omega, V70 doesn't matter what

The other five would change frequently, as there are lots of things I'd like to try for a while:

24v Capri, Murena, Interceptor, GT6, Austin 7, P5 Rover, Elan/Europa/Esprit, new A110, Hustler 6, Lancer Evo2 or 3, Jimny, Aston V8, Gordon Keeble, hotrods, customs, I might be able to track down the Panther 6 I moved severeal years ago, anything interesting that comes up

I couldn't keep 10 cars permanently. The estate could quite easily be a largish pickup, like the current Ranger, in basic work spec.

I could make a good case for owning just 2 cars: the XJ12, and a frequently changing toy.

I can see that, one really special car and a practical one.

It would be cool to own a Lancia Thema 8.32 for a spell, but you wouldn't want to live with it. Citroen XM v6 likewise. Pug 306 GTi would stay a little longer, as would a 405 Mi16 4x4...

A V6 Xantia could be a keeper.

more for the rotating 5:

C6 is equivalent to a contemporary XJ6(same engine), and would be fun to try.

SM, Birotor GS if you could find one, 2Cv for about an hour, Rancho and rose tinted specs back to when I was 8(I wouldn't end up digging the damn thing out of the dunes with a kid's beach spade though)

Mx5/Mr2/MGF for comparison, although they're all fun

Turbo R

Alfasud

The flat-front mk2 escort I would have like 30 years ago: built pinto on ITBs, five speed, full Custom interior, 6&7" four spokes, LSD, diamond white with a vinyl roof etc.

Lotus Sunbeam & Carlton

Chrysler 180 and V6 Tagora, I could keep one in France.

Mehari  and Moke

electric Mini to lose the bloody awful drivetrain ;D

hi-spec Gen3 Camaro

Chrysler Imperial (a Black Beauty replica would be good)

TVRs, 60s and the very last six cylinder one

TR6

and loads of others

The shorter wheelbase puts the rear wheel too far forward for that. It's the same on  the XJS, which uses the same platform.

I like the long wheelbase saloon best. Back when Jaguar produced stylish modern cars, unlike the revisions, X300 etc.

We should all remember though, that although great to look back on with rose tinted specs, and still nice to look at today, with most modern cars no more distinctive than the average fridge - most of these old cars would be complete shite to drive these days.  ;)
And some listed in posts above would have been shite to drive even when they were new, imo.  ::) :-X :D

Many of these old cars were no more distinctive to their contemporaries than modern cars are. Cars have always looked very similar!

Many of these cars were shite when new, especially the exotics which were handmade, often poorly engineered and meant as fashionable toys.

Part of the appeal for me is that many aspects of modern cars are backwards steps: massive wheels and tyres, rock hard suspension, over light controls, bulky steeply raked windscreens(and the huge amount of cabin space that is wasted as a result), overpowered engines that with raucous noisy exhausts, ugly interiors full of electronic junk I never use, etc etc

Wouldnt disagree with most of that. :y
Although it wasnt difficult to tell an Escort, Viva and Avenger (for example) apart from 30 yards, but most modern cars from similar groups in their ranges, all look near identical to me.

Add Marinas to that list. Draw the waistline, or the rear window/roof/boot transition and compare them. The real differences are how each company did things like lights or bumpers: properly integrated and  styled rear lights on the Avenger, stuck on after thoughts on the Escort. Rootes always did styling well. The last interesting thing about a Viva was when my 7year old sister threw up in our aunt's car. Deb is now 49......

Hell, I can tell trim levels apart on the Avenger and some Escorts but I'm an anorak ::) . They're all similar size cars, with similar running gear, costing about the same,  designed at roughly the same time to produce a fashionable look. So how could they not look very similar?

Every now and then somebody produces a radical change that proves popular, like the Sierra/Golf/100E/etc, which leads everybody else down that road.

Other things to consider:
I'm sure we all think of the Volvo 200 as really conservative, but it was a facelift of a 1966 car!
Base-model early Sierras did not age well, yet a 1300 mk2 Cavalier still looks good
The Megane II was brave, but how many do you still see compared to 18 y/o Astras which weren't. At all.
You mentioned the Avenger, now compare it to its big brother the Chrysler 180.....

My two wheeled collection would be a real fantasy garage,as these days they really would be just to look at and remember when I was younger.
Lets see now......

Ducati 916. The most beautiful looking motorcycle ever produced.
Kawasaki KH 250 - for very good and very bad memories.
Kawasaki 500 Mach3 H1 - to remember the fear they used to induce.
Kawasaki 750 Mach 4 H2 - see above.
Kawasaki 900 Z1 - could only dream of buying in when I was 15. And to complete the collection of 70,s Kwaks.
Early Yamaha R1 - changed the biking world forever, and a beast of a thing to ride.
Honda Fireblade Urban Tiger. - It was thought to have been the bench mark, and then the R1 came along. Easier to ride quick though.
Any ex race bike that had been ridden by Joey Dunlop.
Honda CB600F. Great fun in the real world, and arguably the best all round bike ever made.
Yamaha FS1E - I wanted one for my 16th birthday and got a fackin Casal instead.  ;D

I was thinking the same, as almost all posters have listed older cars, but even though I've had 3.0S Capri, RS2000 Custom, 3.5 Rover Vitesse TP etc., I wouldn't want any of them back other than to sell on. And oh boy, do I wish I'd kept them to sell on, well the Fords at least.  ::)

I'd genuinely struggle to name ten cars as my ideal garage collection.  :-\

Audi RS6 Avant (practical load lugger that gets along a bit)  :)
Audi A6 Avant 3.0 BiTdi  (for speed with some economy)
M Sport Kombi Transit Van
M Sport Transit with day van mods
Bmw 535d/335d M Sport Touring (regardless of what people think of Bmw, the user interface is very good, (less clunky than some other premium brands), as is the ZF-8 transmission). I've had a fair few Bmw 3 Series/4 Series Coupes over the years but they are no longer practical for us so I'm done with them and I hate convertibles of any brand (even though we did have a Bmw F33 for a while).  ::)

And from here on I'm stuck. I'm not really into supercars, as in owning one (RS6 excepting).
I know electric is the future, and they are very fast off the lights, but I have no interest in any of them yet.  :)

There are no good or bad lists as everyone has their own fond memories/dream car list, so we'll all differ in our opinions.  :)

Logged
My fun car is a 2020 Bmw F32 430d M Sport with indicators.
My cruiser is an Audi A6 Avant S Line Black Edition with indicators.

Billy Connollys' Harley Trike is about as close as I would want to get to a bike... The Challenger convertible will do everything that the trike does, but with four people in it and I always reasoned that I can't fall off a car.

A bike would be an efficient way of killing myself :D

The throttle works both ways. I think that everyone who loves power, speed etc. should try bikes, although in a controlled manner.
Modern bikes are so bloody quick its very easy for the inexperienced to get into a lot of trouble in no time at all.
But, if you start quite slowly to get the feel of things and build up your speed with experience, there are few, if any things that can give the same thrill.
An average tourer type bike, or a 600 will be quick enough to blitz any experience of acceleration and speed youve had in a car. Unless youve driven a top of the range Lambo or similar or a single seater in anger. Even then.........
Go on give it a go, you know you want to really.  ;D

Trouble is you start taking advantage of the size/speed and suddenly you're 'filtering' through traffic at more than walking pace (bikes, by design, fall over if too slow) and before you know it you're doing 30 into a car door ::)

I will stick to four wheels, especially now I am heading towards a point where I won't grow back so quickly...  :D

I gave up motorbikes at 18 1/2 when my RD125 died.

Doing nearly 40mph downhill on a bicycle is more than enough exhilaration for me....

To me, it's a case of right tool for the job.

I don't need lots of power or speed to enjoy myself in a car. I'm not into track work, so a well setup slow car is more fun on the road than a fast one: I've owned 11(10? 12?) Capris, but only one was a V6. And the performance improvement on that(fitting a 2.9) was to eliminate some of the compromises(wouldn't run on unleaded, power torque, dreadful throttle response, plastic timing gear etc) cheaply. The problem was I ended up with a car that was so effortlessly fast that I frequently missed my turning at night because I was doing more than double the 30 limit without even noticing. It actually became a chore to drive, because I had to deliberately not use the attributes I had paid extra for. Yet the tweaked 2.0l could be worked hard without being dangerous. I would get far enjoyment from a Caterham 160 than the 4xBHP/3x£ versions.

A motorbike is excellent transport for urban commuting, as it is so small. Traffic isn't a problem, nor is parking, £10 of fuel lasts a long time and other running costs are low. I would be using the modern equivalent of the 250 Superdreams(which replaced the new CB200 he had for six months) my Dad used for 30 years, some of which included commuting to Vauxhall for 10 months a year. The other 2 months highlights the compromises: how you deal with the weather. And every couple of years we had to collect him from one of the London hospitals because somebody had knocked him off it - a pedestrian walked into the side of him once ???

Big bikes are like exotic cars to me; I like to see them, but what they do has absolutely no appeal. Same applies to boats, planes, horses, racecars, off-roading, etc - fun to try occasionally.

Skills make a big difference too: I'm faster over the ground on the same roads, in the same cars(I could borrow Minis, or Capris if I wanted to) than I was 30 years ago, with less fuss, and far fewer of the oh shit moments that used to be commonplace. At 50, I am not going to learn how to do that on motorbikes without a lot of pain.

And it simply isn't worth it.

Fair enough I suppose. I got sensible enough to give them up when I hit 50. £10 of petrol might not go as far as you think. My last bike, a modest CBR600 averaged 35mpg.  ;)
Probably something to do with 4x 28mm carbs on an engine often revving to 12000 rpm I suppose.
I agree about the car driving btw. I can drive between two points nowadays at least as quickly as I did when I was young, but its a lot less spectacular.
Learning to read as far ahead as possible and react in advance, rather than constantly either hard on the throttle or the brakes, makes it seem a lot less rushed and exciting, but it isnt slower.  :y

But you're using an Astra VXR, when I'd be driving a 1200....

Reading well ahead, and having a plan means you don't have to react. There is no downside to this sort of driving technique :y

I've noticed an omission from some lists.

The fanny magnet that is the MARINA

Had one of those, the brakes failed when it went through a puddle.

Saw a Hillman Avenger saloon the other day-looked to be in very good nick from what I saw as it crept past me in traffic.Hard to describe the colour but it was one of the limited editions they did and had a pale vinyl roof that only went from above the windscreen back as far as the "B" pillar.

My fading memory tells me that model might have been called the Sunseeker.  :-\
Which reminds me, I want to add a well sorted Avenger Tiger to my list.

I'm with you: 2.0l Brazilian-block engine(with the BRM 16v head if you can find one ;D ), decent five speed gearbox, sensible period looking wheel and tyres - mix of 6&7" Minilites with 185/70s - and a nice interior with plenty of soundproofing. In red, with the full stripes and silly rear spoiler.

That's nearly 200bhp in a <900kg car, which ought to be fun.....

Ad uprated springs , dampers, an LSD, and a quick rack, and away you go. A car capable of being much quicker than most of the people who might drive it.
Ive seen several well sorted Avengers driven in anger, in competition in Norn Irn, and they were undoubtedly a pretty competitive and much under rated car in their day.
It was a lot cheaper to build one of those than a competitive Escort too. Although Escort bits were more readily available, if more expensive.

145lb Capri(same as effect as Avenger ones, but 1/4 of the cost) springs on the front, 195lb on the rear(these have to be Avenger/Sunbeam) for a 2" drop. I don't see the need for uprated shocks, new stock ones are fine. Poly bush throughout, and the rear suspension arms need help: box the top, and a strap across the bottom ones in front of the spring cup. Tubular top arms on a rally car.
.
LSD only on the really high power engine I mentioned; the gearbox upgrade is necessary because the stock can't handle more than stock Tiger power(which had a stiffer than normal case), and an overdrive fifth means a 4.1 diff is usable. Axle could be better, Lotus Sunbeams used the Salisbury HA for for strength

Don't like quickracks, the car is virtually undrivable with them. Replacing the stamped clamps with solid ones is worthwhile:

The commercial ones were a lot longer but were nearly £200, mine was about £2 and an evening's work

Capri vented brakes are a decent upgrade, and easy to fit. Rears are big drums, and are plenty good enough

They were cheaper than an Escort because all the bits you needed to buy for an Escort were standard: properly located strut front end with roller bearing tops; four link rear axle; standard DCOEs on the right car, twin Strombergs on lots of others; unbreakable big bore, short stroke engine - 190hp and 9000rpm on stock crank, rods, pushrods, rockers and shaft; huge engine bay with plenty of room for all the parts; Rootes competition department wasn't as well funded as Ford's but was just as serious.

I well remember having plates welded across the top of the rear links after one bent due to corrosion and the car went along the road like a crab.
Your probably right about quick rack etc. for road use, but in my mind im back in Norn Irn competing in the dozens of hillclimbs sprints etc. I used to marshall at in my teens.  ;D
I had Koni 30% uprated dampers on the front (iirc) and good old Spax adjustables on the rear. Although the rears were only adjusted to number 4 out of 12 (or was it 15 ?) settings, so probably not much stiffer than standard new dampers.
The old thing handled really nicely though. Slow in a straight line, but probably surprised a few drivers following, when it didnt need to slow much for the bends.
Had a lot of fun in that car. Then I decided I would cut all the rust out. There wasnt much car left at the end, which was pretty standard for a 7 year old car then. Sold it for scrap and got £15 for it.  ::)

Yamaha FS1E - I wanted one for my 16th birthday and got a fackin Casal instead;D

At least the mid seventies Casal had a bit of individuality about it. The 'Fizzy' was for those kids who had no imagination.

I loved the Italian sport mopeds of that time. I had a Garelli Rekord which would piss all over my mates on their FS1E's, Suzuki AP50's and of course the glacially slow 4 stroke Honda SS50. My Garelli gave 6.2 BHP from 49cc and when it was running and the pathetic wop electrics were not playing up, was great fun. :y

I also remember Fantic.....Gitane......Malagutti....Puch Grand Prix......there were a few other obscure makes back then.

I also had a brief stay in hospital when I 'looped' an RD 400 when intoxicated. ;D

The SS50 was a missile compared to the Casal.  :-[ :'( ;D
I only ever rode it when I was going somewhere I knew there would probably be cops lurking. Otherwise I had a mate who had a Norton Commando I had talked him into buying, but he didnt like it much so used to let me borrow it.
I sold the Casal for about a third of what my Dad paid for it when it was 9 months old. The old man was not happy, but it was his fault for being too tight to buy me something decent.
Thats how my 16 year old logic saw it anyway.  ;D

The cops did catch me on the Norton by the way. I briefly thought about riding through the roadblock, but the fact they were toting machine guns soon made me see sense.  ;D

I used to love the black and gold tank on the 750/850 Commando. :y

2 speed gear with change  on a twistgrip on left hand bar. Top speed was 38mph. Bloke a sold it to rode it around Ireland in a week. Covered 600 miles, and spend a fiver on petrol. He was a bit mental though.  ;D
The Commando mentioned was black & gold with Dunstall bodywork. A lovely example, but he destroyed the engine one day by trying to rev it like one of hos beloeved two stroke Kwaks.  ::)

A mate of mine still has a Jota. Ive rode it and it was a nice enough thing to ride, but my 10 year old CBR600 left it for dead in a straight line and on the twistys. The march of progress.

I remember in about 1985 Kawasaki did a great advert for their new '450 MPH triple'. This advert has always stuck with me and Kawasaki obviously used the 2 stroke triples from the late sixties and early seventies as a reference point.
