Question for Lizzi
« on: 29 July 2014, 22:52:20 »

(Or anyone else who knows about steam trains)

Our house backs onto the Cambridge to Norwich line and over the past couple of months we have had a steam train going past, had one about an hour ago.

Question is is there anywhere to find out what the trains are and when they are running, if i know when they are come through
i can get to the station and stand on the bridge like i did when i was a kid.

Cheers
Andy

Any use?

http://www.uksteam.info/tours/trs14.htm :y

Yes, that is one good source of information on what main line steam is running and when. :y :y

In addition, and the one I use mainly, is "The Guide" towards the back pages of the Steam Railway Magazine, available monthly from WH Smiths or other good newsagents.  That will tell you of not only due main line steam runs but also events on all the nations steam railways, plus much more throughout the magazine's pages. 8) 8) ;)

Well, in fairness, without him we wouldn't now have the preserved railway lines and running steam locomotives in the quantities we have.  He prompted many enthusiasts to jump to it and preserve out of anger towards the slaughter of the railways he over saw  If steam locomotives had just been allowed to fade away somewhere in the 1980s as originally planned it is doubtful there would have been the mass preservation movements that developed so quickly with 19,000 locomotives being scrapped in just a few years. The individual branch lines would also have slowly died without the mass movement taking them on with so much motive power suddenly within their reach.

So, cheers Dr. Beeching! :D :D :D :D :D ;)

As said on another thread, biggest mistake was selling the land the lines were on.

It varies Andy, there are not many tours out that way (check Taxi Al's link) so may well be loco visits to the likes of the mid or north Norfolk railway (e.g. there was a double loco move to Dereham on the 24th June - 60009+61994).

The running varies a lot and can be very last minute so the web is the only place to get up to date info.

If you do spot one you can search on www.realtimetrains.co.uk to see where it is going to/from.

At the minute, steam movements are pretty limited due to fire risks
