3.2 Auto Box only.
« on: 11 January 2013, 09:01:24 »

So what was the thinking behind this?, Ive heard various rumours as to why but does anyone know the official reason behind this?, I assume it wasn't just the UK and Euroland what about further afar?

Just interested, Chris.

Ohh, I recall something about DBW being too sensitive & clutch issues? Can't see why 2.6 got it though if thats the case.

Most were autos anyway from 3.0's maybe just cost cutting towards the end?  :-\

DBW 3.2 Ex Plod seem to get away with?

I thought the 3.0 Manuals had a good market share, especially on the MV6's.

I'm guessing the demand for manuals was probably not going to justify offering them.

Most 3.2s appear to have been Elites and if you're going for the waterbed suspension model, you probably wouldn't specify optional driver involvement. ;)

Could be that failure rates of clutches / DMFs / gearboxes in testing was a bit too high for them to be offered in volume, and not worth pouring money into resolving any issues, although, clutches aside, 3.0/3.2 manuals don't seem to have any reliability issues in our experience?

My understanding is that demand for the manual on the 3.2 Elite (being the key model with the 3.2) was deemed to low to be worth supporting.

Could it be because the manual Victorian signal box runs on steam only?

Signal box? What, you mean cables, pullies and rods? Doesn't the Omega manual box use semaphore to communicate with the gear stick? ::)

...and a block and tackle to operate the clutch. 15 pulls on the rope gives 0.0015 mm of bite. Although how they transmit all that vibration through rope is.... ingenious. ::)

There are plenty of 'up market' car that only have the option of an auto box ....... my Merc is another that didn't have the option of 3 pedals.

There was a time when Mercedes would build any specification  to order, albeit at a price :-\

Had a look at an M reg E320 estate with a factory fitted manual. Must have cost the original owner a fortune, as it had just about every available option on it ::) 'Exceptional condition for year' actually meant 'rusted to hell', so it stayed there ::)
