That was dreadful !
« on: 17 September 2018, 20:20:59 »

Mate of mine bought a  V8 MGB GT a couple of years ago (1975 model) has spent to date around £28,000 on it including the purchase, car is totally immaculate & looks fantastic. On Saturday he dropped by to see us & took me for a spin which proved to me how much cars have improved over the years , the engine note was superb but in all honesty I felt very vunerable hurtling along in this "classic".

Similar story to the four pot version I drove month or so ago. Not a great car in the 70,s but absolutely woeful now.  :y

.... but in all honesty I felt very vunerable hurtling along in this "classic".

A mate has, in the past, had both a Reliant Regal & a BMW Isetta ..... They both define 'vulnerable'  ??? ??? ???

I never felt that same vulnerability in the e-Type TBH. But then again, due to its shape, the doors are about 10" thick in places. Admittedly it's just 2 bits of bent tin, but its all psychology lol

Best to just remember them. I took a TR6 out last week for a few miles, wish I never as I used to love them cars. Memories were much better.

If you want a classic that's actually involving to drive you have to go Lotus and avoid anything mass produced by brummies.

Unfortunately, there are other consequences to doing so.

What about a Trevor? Also not mass produced, also comes with a lot of problems (many similar to those of Lotus - like rusty chassis) ;D

Why ?  ???  I had a drive in one about 10 years ago, which someone had spent a fortune on . It was race spec everything - engine, suspension, brakes etc....
It was a bloody horrendous contraption, and my Omega would leave it for dead on any type of road you can think off.
I suppose its an emotional thing, as I actually want an old Fiat 500.  ;D

Yes old classic cars are definitely an emotional thing that defy all reason.  ::)

I'd like either a classic Mini or a Series 3 Landy.  :y  Both awful to drive and own, but fun nonetheless.  ;D

Good investments as well!  :y

My daily is a mk1 MX5, I'm used to feeling vulnerable. A lorry wheel/tyre is about the same height as my car.

Not really a classic in the same way as the cars mentioned above, but a pretty good compromise of retro fun with a nearly bullet proof engine, just a shame about the rust  ;D

How original  ;)

Most comments like that come from someone who has never driven one but has just dismissed it as a hairdressers car. I also doubt many hairdressers use the car for Autosolos, Sprints and other entry level motorsports. I even had a go at 'losing control in formation' (drifting) only took 85PSI  :o in the rears to make it skiddy.
