As a nipper I'd be sitting on somebody's lap all the way to Cornwall. Nobody had or bothered with seat belts, so if you were 'launched through a 'toughened glass' windscreen it could be quite messy.

I did get 9 in a '55 Ford Pop once, had to open the inside doors as a counter balance on corners to prevent rolling it.

and wind the clock on to 1988, the nurse at the hospital was a bit put out when we wanted to place our new born lad in a rear facing seat on the front seat (no air bags & no rear seat belts at the time) when she wanted to place him on SWMBO's lap

My stepfather, who owned a large motor dealers, including heavy transport, drove a 100E Anglia, with overdrive on top gear (3rd?) for at least 10 years. He ran this after my mother took the side off his  - 1st in the UK - Austin Atlantic (A90) convertible, which was a beautiful car, cream with red leather. Everything electrically operated, most of which failed within 6 months! It had the first push button radio I had seen.
