Two Mercs
« on: 24 September 2018, 20:39:28 »

Been in a 64 plate SLK-not far so couldn't really judge on its comfort/handling-not keen on styling of these with long nose and dumpy rear end,but the dash I liked a lot it was uncluttered with instruments clear and easily read. Then I went in a later model C200-again not far-the styling was more pleasing to me but the dash appeared cluttered and less clear than the earlier car and had one of those gormless screen things stuck on top of dash like a chav special afterthought so that alone would put me off having one.If manufacturers must fit these screens why can't they integrate them into the dash design? >:(

Well I believe you honest :y

I  know what you mean about the gormless* chav screens . My dad has one on his fiesta. They look like afterthoughts.

* great word, haven't heard that used for ages.

I must admit I love Merc E-Classes, and one like the E350 that I had on loan the other year when my Omega was off the road.

I really could get used to one of them :D :D 8) :y

Must say I like the look of the S class they have on loan across the road from me although what it's like inside I don't know.Given the money though I'd still go "classic car" rather than anything modern.

Bro has just got another S Class (diesel) after clearly falling out of love with BMW.

I wouldn't want one.

Wouldn't have a diesel Merc or any other "executive" type luxury saloon, big car big V8 petrol is the only option in my opinion.

For exec limos, a V6 diesel is a good choice due to significant torque and smoother running than a medium sized V8 lump...

...not that I am against V8s, far from it!!!

A V8 is the wrong noise for a large exec, that should be quiet and effortless.

V8 should be in proper cars. Quick cars that inspire the driver. End of.

A V8 burble is loved by a true petrolhead , it's what a true petrolhead aspires to owning. A diesel executive is for someone who can't really afford to run the petrol version that's my opinion, which I will stick to.😎

He bought a house for £700,000. Immediately had it bulldozed and a nicer one built to replace it. Just liked the plot the old one had been built on ::) ;D
I would like to experience being proper rich. Even for a month, just to see if its as enjoyable as it looks.  ;D

Like I said, certainly not dissing V8s. Far from it. Its a 6/12 cylinder is smoother and better suited to limos.

As for costs, whilst I probably could afford 20,000 miles pa at sub 20mpg, I'd probably have to give up food and drink ;D

Standard issue board of exec car where my OH works appears to be a Maserati. Though that doesn't preclude derv, these days.

Where I work it's all Range Rovers. Derv, of course.

He has built his wealth and the company with it by being brilliant at his job. Despite being a disagreeable wee shite.   ;)
The company started in 1968 in Old street with a few employees, and the dreams ambitions and determination of one  self taught cockney geezer. It grew to a certain point and then the aforementioned finance director came on board.
His financial knowhow then helped take it to a PLC which bought out other less well run companies and has offices and facilities all over the world. They even bought out a Chinese company a couple of years ago.
I don't begrudge people like that their wealth tbh. Just wish I had their brains.  ;D

During my last years of having a company car it became less desirable due to the changes in taxation on such "perks".  I did very high mileage, but for some colleagues stuck in Head Office the tax penalty became higher and higher.  Indeed some would drive out 'on business' when ever possible to boost their declared business mileage to the Inland Revenue!

I can imagine now it is better for any director on their salaries to buy whatever they want, including V8's, and avoid the huge tax penalty. ;)

It's a party conference, Lizzie. Think back to all the bluster and bullshit of previous conferences, and even manifestos. They might be trying to present a united front, but the more sensible MP's have stayed away, and will make their feelings known at the right time.

My Bro and sister in law both used to have company cars... Only catch was that they were only allowed Vauxhall or Toyota diesels.

Her last one, a Mokka with every option, was due to be delivered the week that they made her redundant... She didn't get the car, but after 20 years they saw her right.

Bro's role changed, so that he was hypothetically office based and didn't meet the criteria for a company car... The sliding scale allowance that he was switched to paid for the then 2 year old 330d in two years and he gets any site visit mileage paid for at a rate which pays his monthly fuel bill...

If he gets a company car again, he is now of a level where he gets an allowed amount and free choice.

I bloody hope you are right STEMO!  In the past I have seen and heard such political nonsense, but what worries me this time around a lot of young voters are following like sheep and think they are in a Labour Revolution, as I indeed saw happen in the 1970's.  Conservatives have been weakened significantly by May and Brexit, so Corbyn does, very worryingly, stand a chance of being PM.  God help us all!!! :o :o :o

Young voters? Ha! There are far more of us than them.  ;D

Also, the 'young voters' that you see around the conference and on the news are not, in my view, representative. 'Rent a mob' springs to mind. My 19 year old son thinks Corbyn is an idiot.

He bought a house for £700,000. Immediately had it bulldozed and a nicer one built to replace it. Just liked the plot the old one had been built on ::) ;D
I would like to experience being proper rich. Even for a month, just to see if its as enjoyable as it looks.  ;D
We'll see how rich he is when the company has it's next audit.  ;D

Just wish I had their brains.  ;D

That is the very wealth and job creator businessman who Corbyn wants to dispose of in a full red socialist war on Capitalism! ::) ::) ::) >:( >:(
It's a party conference, Lizzie. Think back to all the bluster and bullshit of previous conferences, and even manifestos. They might be trying to present a united front, but the more sensible MP's have stayed away, and will make their feelings known at the right time.

Well that is one very switched on son you have there STEMO, and he has cheered me up ;D ;D ;D

Maybe hope is not lost yet! ::) ::) ;)

All of this boils down to one question: Will there be a general election before 2021? If not, then Corbyn has at least another two conferences to go, providing he isn't kicked out on his arse before then. If so, then the tories deserve everything they get, which will probably be another five years in government. I'm not over worried about things right now. Not things at home, anyway, there are much bigger dangers in the world.

While I know some 19-21 year olds who think the sun shines out of his arse.
