CD player not playing copied discs
« on: 28 December 2010, 22:59:57 »

After buying my Omega I tried various old and new cd's in it - some copied and the rest originals.  Not had a problem playing the originals but the copied discs seem to vary whether they play or not, some play ok and others jump although this seems to be intermittent as sometimes they jump less or work more.

I know the discs are okay as they work on everything else so is there a compatabillity issue or is there a fault on the set? Do you need a certain type of media or brand?  Its the original 4 disc front loading cd player fitted in the dash.

Any help appreciated.

From what ive been reading on here they wont play copied CD's and you have a good chance of buggering the cd player up  if you continue to try to play the copied ones

Playing copied CD's will 99% of the time, kill the laser in your player! They aren't designed to play CDR's!

The Omega is NOT designed to play copied discs, and serious damage can occur as a result.

If you have a trawl through previous posts on the forum, you will find some very good explanations as to why this happens.

Officially, you should not play CDRs in Omega CD players.

If yours is prefacelift with a 6 disc changer in boot, they are a bit more resilient, and you normally get away with it (with maybe just the odd 'no disc' errors).

If its a facelift with a 4 disc changer built into head unit, CDRs will destroy the laser pretty quickly. Likewise for any single slot CD units fitted to Omegas.

Right thanks for clearing that up.  I won't put any more in then.  Luckily I don't think I damaged it because it still plays genuine discs fine.

Thanks again for the information.

It's in the manual. Certainly is in the face lift manual anyway.

Maybe i'm just lucky or something i'm doing is "Lucky" but i have NEVER had a single problem with copied CD's in all the cars i've had . Going back to the days when CDR's were very expensive 10-15 years ago. Used to work at Halfords as a Technical manager in charge of the I.C.E. department so i made all the Demo Cd's (never had any problems) apart from them being nicked by customers (and staff) Halfords never had a licence in them days so technically we couldnt play them  :-X
Anyway my present car a facelift omega 2002 Had for 4 years now will play copies and original CD's without any errors or jumping/skipping issues what so ever.
I know there is a lazer focusing issue with some older cd players and like some of the experts on here will tell you this is what damages the lazer itself.
I always burn my cd's very slowly 2X or 4X max. I think this gives the lazer time to read the disc properly.

I dont mean to tred on the experts toes here. I'm just saying that cd copies have never been a problem for me.

A CDR/RW is a very different construction to a CD

Have a read back over previous posts and you will see very detailed explanations as to why you should not use them and the damage that can occur.

The CD changer does not support the playback of rewritable (CD-RW) discs.

When using self-recorded audio discs (CD-R)playback errors may occur depending on the quality and surface of the CD-R used.

Page 32 of instruction manual for NCDC 2011,2013 & 2015.

Hope this helps.

OK, lets put this one firmly to bed.

There are many formats of disc that all look similar, CD, SA-CD, CD-R, CD-RW, CD-T, VCD, DVD to name but a few. They are all very different in the way that the work, and although everybody accepts that a  DVD will not play in a CD player, people refuse to apply the same logic across the other formats..

The Omega was designed to play one format of CD and one format ONLY. And if your disc shows this label on it, then it should be a compatable disc.

It was never designed to play the discs that came out for the computer, using much smaller pits and troughs to record the data, and although you may get away with playing these, the laser will struggle and burn itself out fairly quickly. If your disc has this label, your should not use it.

The recordable format used nowadays wasn`t even commercially available when the Omega CD was designed, so there is no way that it could be deemed as compatable, and the data is even smaller meaning that laser deterioration can actually be measured whilst playing these discs. If your CD has this label, then kiss goodbye to the stereo if you continue to play them at all, let alone for any length of time.

Now can we put an end to this.

That looks like a fine contender for a howtoo or an entry in our maintenance guides/FAQ section. ;)   :y
