changing crank sensor on a 2.2
« on: 14 February 2014, 12:03:19 »

Y188NFA 2.2 petrol manual saloon
Car does not start occasionally, so i am changing the crank sensor. It's trickier than I expected. I have removed the n/s engine mounting and the dip stick, and can now see the head of the bolt. I can see it from above, but cannot get a socket (Torx female) on it from above. . Any tips?

No need to remove the engine mount, just remove the dipstick guide tube and use a 5mm (iirc :-\) open ended spanner to loosen the bolt. It can then be removed with your fingers (a) if they're slim enough! and (b) you have some sense of spacial awareness (you can picture in your mind what your eyes cannot see!).
The really fiddly bit is getting the plug end of the old sensor through the small gap behind the power steering pump & the new one back through the opposite way :D :y

Are you sure it's crank sensor? Got codes?

Crank sensor on 2.2 is usually bullet proof, usually cam sensor problems. Lots of cranking but should fire.

No, I am not sure it's crank sensor. I base my diagnosis on my experience of V6s. I may have made an awful error. I have not a code reader and the 2.2 does not give paper clip codes. I thought changing the crank sensor was easy, like on the V6. I did change the cam sensor last year, for genuine Vx. I will let you know how I get on.

There's none so deaf as will not listen. Have changed crank sensor, no change. I ignored good advice and have paid the price.

Most likely seems cam sensor, though it was changed last July for new genuine Vx.

What I need is my codes reading. I have tried pedal trick, and paper clip method, no codes. I have been looking at code readers all the week, Autex Multiscan 509 seems favourite, but not simple (out of production, counterfeits, etc).  I suppose I must go on bended knee to my local dealer and have him read codes for me.

This morning went to Downside Motors. local Vauxhall dealer, and begged for a TechII reading. Out came the diagnosis 'crankshaft sensor present, reading incorrect'. So my aftermarket sensor is no good after all. Serves me right, you will all say. But in January my 2.5 estate refused to start, I diagnosed crank sensor, bought one on e-bay for £25, popped it in, worked perfectly. I have desribed in an earlier thread how I unwisely replaced the £25 sensor for a genuine Vx sensor, only to have it fail. I am still running with the £25 sensor..

So now I suppose I must buy a genuine Vx sensor and repeat the dreary change operation. Boring.

Here is the old thread, with PhilRich saying it can be done from above. It needs slim fingers!

How does the dipstick tube come out, I have a 2001 2.2 and also got problems. And is there a write up showing or explaining how to do crank sensor removal without engine mount removal.

Have not got  a 2.2 here, but I think to remove the dip stick tube all you do is release the clamp near the top, remove the dip stick. grab the tube and wriggle it out.
As far as I know the only guide is my note among the maintenace guides, 'Changing crank sensor on a 2.2 petrol Omega
« on: 15 February 2014, 15:58:09 »', plus the above note from PhilRich.
