Title: Auto solenoid
Post by: Migalot on 20 June 2018, 16:56:39
Irrespective of other issues concerning my crank sensor, I intend to have my auto box filter and ATF both renewed, as the car has done nearly 70k miles.

I thought it might be useful to have the 2/3 solenoid exchanged at the same time (should be straightforward once the sump is off).

Unfortunately, I can't source one. Sussex Auto Parts tell me it's a BMW 4L30E box and the part number is 24337537062. Everywhere I look it seems to be unavailable.

Any friendly advice warmly welcomed. :y

BMW did use them, although they were bought from GM
And it is a 4L30

I wouldn't bin a 70k box and fit an (possibly unkown) AR35 to a car which doesn't do many miles per year. Solenoid change sounds like a good idea to me.

Jpat rings a bell, istr they used to advertise gearbox spares on here, so sounds like a good place to try for the solenoid.  :y
It is indeed a GM L430 unit.  ;)

I did to a 2.2....but it was a known working ok box from a member on here.and i never looked back, and that box is still going strong today.....think jpat were not cheap on the valves..then its fluid out sump off roll pins out..swap valves hoping that you have sorted the problem of the thump into gear effect when going from 2-3....

I think you're right. I'll source from Jpat if poss.  :y

Odd that Sussex Auto Parts were adamant about it being a BMW box! ???

Filter already ordered, but that Dexron deal looks good.  :y :y

Cheers, Dave!

I won't be doing the change myself, so I am not sure whether the garage would want to use the seal instead of the gasket. I would need to check with them.

There are 2 sump gaskets ,
a good garage would do it the way you asked them too
many on here recommend RTV instead of a gasket on the sumps  :y

Many garages won't use customer supplied parts...

OK, no probs, Dave. Cheers.  :y

I use a small local garage and they are friendly and accommodating – they fitted my supplied wishbones the other week!

They offered to swap the solenoid – if I provided the part (though no guarantees about outcome as they are not transmission specialists).

Many garages won't use customer supplied parts...
Because they get a discount ,60 days to pay for parts and charge customer list price
I don't trust garages , do the work my-self ,with parts i supply and give myself the standard 10 second warranty  ;D

Agreed with all the above, but own parts can complicate the warranty process and it gives them the excuse to charge twice the labour if it fails...

The roll pins can be a right bugger to get out, careful what you lever against if doing it yourself !

Any tips like that will be passed (nervously!) onto the garage.

Right. All systems go!

Thanks to Dave for the Dexron III and sealant links – both ordered.
Thanks to Steve B for the solenoid link. Ordered! £38.98 + around a tenner delivery.
Much appreciated, guys!! :y :y

Filter already ordered and on its way (from Germany).

Any tips for changing the solenoid? It's the only thing that's making me nervous. :-X

Im sure there has been a thread with pics (Jamesv6cdx ??) in the dim & distant past. Might be worth a bit of searching.  :y
